SHU UMERA EYELASH CURLER! XSTATIC XPLORES THE EXOTIC SUNDAYS!
Xstatic817 here, today I invite you ladies to take a trip down memory lane. Back when we weren’t makeup-obsessed, but instead, makeup novices. Back when all we thought we needed was a few eyeshadows, one mascara, and a lip gloss that preferably tasted like vanilla. Back when we had no freakin’ clue what we were doing.
Probably, like many of you, I learned many of makeup tips from my sister. She used liquid eyeliner like nobody’s business (by the by - I still can’t). She had the coolest eyeshadows in all sorts of colors that I would never have dreamed of wearing (I wore taupe and shimmery taupe to spice it up a bit). And she used that tool that looked a bit like a medieval torture device - an eyelash curler.
I should probably stop here and say that my sister is almost 4 years younger than me. I suppose she just got bitten by the beauty bug earlier than I did. But in high school and into college, I got most of my makeup advice from her.
But back to the eyelash curler. When I first saw it on her vanity, I gasped in horror and said, “You use one of those?!?” She said it was actually quite easy to use and thankfully showed me how. Sure, I hit my eyelid a couple of times in the early days (and, fine, sometimes now, too - I have zero coordination), but it was worth the occasional pinches - my eyelashes looked amazing! Heck, you could actually see the scrawny little things now.
I’m lucky in that I started off using the Rolls Royce of eyelash curlers - shu uemura’s brand. I never had to futz around with a cheaper variety. I’ve since tried a few others - usually ones that come as freebies in gifts-with-purchase, but they don’t compare. Somewhat recently, I heard that shu had updated their classic with a few new twists. Could they improve on perfection? Apparently, yes, as my super-scientific study showed. I used my old shu on my right eye and my new shu on my left, and yes, Virginia, there was a difference -- albeit slight. According to shu, here’s how they updated it:
“The one and only shu uemura Eyelash Curler is now even better! This iconic tool, adored by professional makeup artists and celebrities world-wide, has been redesigned to deliver the perfect curl with ultimate precision. Perfectly measured and finely balanced, the new shu uemura Eyelash Curler is designed to ensure superior functionality and performance. The upgraded silicone pad in a new ‘mushroom’ shape provides a protective, stay-put edge for improved safety and optimum curl. The new, patented hinge is specifically engineered to apply the perfect amount of pressure on eyelashes. The calculated shape, size of frame length and ergonomic handles ensure stability and control, while the curved angle suits all eye shapes.”
The hinge is definitely improved, providing more control. The pad looks different, and I guess it works because my left lashes were more “lifted” than my right ones. Now it seems you’re supposed to change the little silicone pad every 3 months (and they give you an extra) and change the whole dang curler every six. Let’s just say I haven’t quite stuck to that with my old shu and it may or may not have been slightly past its prime. Still, it was working great, and the new one works even better.
So hats off to my sister, Lizzie, for introducing me to this fab product. She isn’t reading this because she’s too busy finishing Breaking Dawn (and as you’re reading this, I probably am too) but she will, so thanks little sister!
So gals, any raves for the new or old shu curler? Or any tips from your sisters - big or little - that you’d like to share with the rest of the class?

Hey so I fiddled with this again and messed around with it and yes, I can indeed agree that this is the shit! This is the best eyelash curler I've ever used. After a mere 7 seconds even, BOOM, beautiful curled lashes and your eyes are wide open. I just wasn't using this right before. Now I squeeze all the way at the base so the top of the curler is touching my eye and hold hard for 7 seconds, then do two more 1 second squeezes and VOILA. wonderful. LOVE THIS.Yeah, true, it is more expensive than normal eyelash curlers, but if I had just sucked it up and bought this one in the first place I wouldn't have a drawer of 6 different eyelash curlers that I never use and that I purcahsed in search of the "holy grail" curler. I will never buy another eyelash curler again.
I'll have to try this! I am in the same skimpy-eyelash boat with alot of chickies. (My brother got the big bold lashes..and chest hair, so I don't feel too bad!) I have pondered these impliments at the drug store, but fear trying them...(I have a picture in my head of sneezing while trying to curl them...and POOF*! I rip out the rest of my barely noticable lashes. ) I'll try this...but I am scared as heck!
Great post! I have to say that I was a tad ticked the first time that the saleswoman at Sephora told me that I couldn't buy more of the rubber strips, but instead had to buy a whole new curler. But, as others have noted, "You can never have too many"! Extras for the car, work, taped underneath the bathroom sink at various rest areas (JUST IN CASE!) ;) I just wish that I hadn't driven the hour drive to Sephora last week. Then again, there's always online shopping & I need more Urban Decay liners which should ensure free shipping - woohoo! But, I have noticed that when I ensure that I'm holding the top of the curler flat against my top lid to secure it before assuming that "I got it, I got it", I never pinch. Although, I have to admit that I usually pinch myself before I remember to use my own trick. Curl on, Ladies! Curl on!
Shu is simply the best--in this newest incarnation or in the old one. It works well and I don't lose lashes. Kevin Aucoin's is sesecond best.
Okay...it may just be the Green Chi reviewer in me but can anyone else really justifybuying a whole new curler every six months instead of just replacing the pads? I havewanted to try this highly prized item for a long time but I just can't imagine going through them so quickly. Even if I stash one everywhere eventually I'm going to reallyrack em up! That could add up considerably given the fact that everyone in my familyseriously lives into their 90's or longer...smoking and drinking all the way. I wantto try this SO badly...but I just feel bad from a land-fill kind of standpoint.
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
So glad to see this product reviewed: have used a Shu since it was whispered about in cult-circles onlyin dark bars,LOL!I can honestly say that no other eyelash curler does the job like this one,I have an old and a new and it's worththe price as it simply lasts forever! Unless you've put on false-lashes and need to smush them together with a lil' more curl,I'd never tell youto use after mascara...Great review of a great product! God I love this site! :)
DYING over "kryssanthe's" review...LOLROF!!!
Love the Shu curler! It really opens up the eyes, not to mention it's a life saver on those days you wake up with wonky eyelashes. *delurks*
is it true that you have to replace the entire curler after 6 months?
I have the new Shu Umera eyelash curler and I feel like I may not be using it right or something cos it's nice and all, but not that amazing. Also, instead of the curl, I get the "straight bend" in my lashes. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or simply what the best way to use it is?
Maybe I'm more rough w/ mine or something, but after a few months I actually split the rubber pad lengthwise from squeezing. Once I've used up both of the pads that come w/ it, I just have no choice but to buy another curler. I can usually get about a year or so out of each curler w/ the 2 pads it comes with. I tried buying just replacement pads but Sephora said Shu doesn't sell them & so then I tried buying some Essence of Beauty pads that I saw at the drugstore, but they don't work worth a crap in the Shu. I do notice that every time I buy a new curler I do see better results than w/ the previous one - not sure if it's the new pads or the curler itself. Note to self: put new pad in old curler to test... Also, I'm w/ xstatic, I walk up my lashes w/ the curler & then go back for one more squeeze at the base - big difference. But I do have to say that I have very long lashes, but they have NO BEND to speak of. My eyelash curler is the same to me as a bra at this point - yes, you CAN go out w/o one, but WHY, WHY, WHY???
the shu does come with instructions on how they want you to use it, but i have my own somewhat-OCD way of curling my lashes. First, I hold the curler at the base of my lashes for about 5-7 seconds, then i move up to the middle and hold for another 5 seconds, then to the top for another 5 seconds. THEN I go back to the bottom and hold again for 5 seconds because I feel like i get more lift this way. its crazy, i know :)
Alas! I must admit, I'm a bit terrified of eyelash curlers. It took me three years to get used to mascara without, you know, stabbing my eyes out. Plus, I've never really had a need for them. I got lucky with full, thick lashes (or at least I thought I did, until I met my boyfriend, whose lashes I would KILL for), so just a coat of mascara and I'm out the door. While it's intriguing, I think I'm going to hold off on buying one until I find my HG foundation and concealer. Complexion comes first!
I got my first eyelash curler as a stocking stuffer for Christmas back in high school, a basic Revlon model, and I stuck with that until about 5 years ago when I bought my first Shu Uemura eyelash curler. I could tell that it was better than the Revlon curler that I started with. I then decided to try a Kevyn Aucoin eyelash curler last year and it was a little awkward at first because it's a little wider, but it curled even better than my beloved Shu curler. Now that Shu Uemura did a redesign, I'm going to have to invest in one because you can never have too many eyelash curlers. Also, since the hubby and I will be moving back to Pennsylvania soon, about 6 miles from a nuclear power plant, I figure when I inevitably grow extra eyes, they'll come in handy. Silver li-ning! *sing-song voice*
I have finally gotten over my fear of eye lash curlers. I have definitely poked my eye out more times than I can count. Shu Umera is the creme de la creme of eyelash curlers. It curls my lashes like no other. My thin, sparse lashes CANNOT live without this. I am so happy to have this tool in my beauty arsenal.
I haven't tried the new one yet, but I do really like my old one. It fits so comfortably on my eyes and it wouldn't dare dream of pulling out one of my lashes like some of the cheap lash curlers I've tried in the past. But still, my shu lash curler comes in second to my Bbeauty one I got from sally's beauty supply (AND it was a 2 for 1!! Score!)
I used to use the Revlon eyelash curler, then I got this for my bday years back. I've never used anything else since! It fit's my Asian eyes well, and also is the only curler I've tried to curl my stubborn stick straight lashes! I wish they would sell replacement pads though. So you don't have to buy a new one everytime, but I will continue to buy it! LOL! :) I have one in my MU bag at home, and I carry one in my purse as well!

I too have a fear of eyelash curlers. I don't want to get poked. But even more so I don't want to lose a lot of eyelashes. Do they really cause a lot of breakage?
yup this is what i use too.. im really interested in the heated ones though, anyone love those?i usually forget to curl my lashes most days, i dont find it makes too much difference in me.
makeup makeup makeup!!!!!!!
eyelash curler - i have one in my purse all the time, can't live without.
about what you said in your post about getting makeup advice form your lil sis. that was me back in middle school and shes 2 yrs younger than me. i cant seem to get an eyelash curler to work unless i heat it up first.
Great post.I wish I had a sister to learn this stuff from. I have one brother and my mother doesn't even wear m/u...wow we are so different.I curl my eye lashes every morning and the one I have right now is ok but I am looking for something great and this sounds like it might be it.

I have finally found an eyelash curler that works for me. I feel like most eyelash curlers are too large for my eyes, they are all awkward in my hand, they only get half of my lashes because they don't angle the same way my lashes and eye do or I end up pinching one part of my eye hard core. So I found a mini eyelash curler from ELF, $3 and I curl my lashes in two parts with no pinching. And it really gets to the root. I highly recommend this lash curler.
This is the best curler I ever used. There is no pinching or anything with this one, unlike a Revlon one I used back in the day (approximately a year before using Shu.) It's so good that I now measure my makeup life as "BS and AS" as in Before Shu and After Shu. I do find, unfortunately, that it does not curl my left eye as well as my right. I think my left eye is flatter than my right and so the curler doesn't fit as well. At the same time, my left doesn't hold a curl as well either. That is so weird... I've had mine for several years and I don't think I've ever changed out the pad. I didn't wear makeup regularly, but I do now and it doesn't seem to have worn out. I just flipped the pad to the other side. Is that bad? I don't care, I get more use that way. I don't know exactly how long I've had mine, so I don't know if I have an old style or the redesigned one. If the new one has more of a mushroom pad, then if I can flip the pad I guess I have an old one? Anyway, if you don't have one, get one.
I just don't love the Shu. It's fine, but it doesn't work any better for me, than the other curlers I've used in the past 10 years that I've been curling my lashes.

I have a really bad experience with eye lash curlers haha. When I was younger probably in gr 8 or 9 I was curling my eye lashes and my hands were wet.. Well idk what I did but that thing just twisted and all my eye lashes came off!!!!! There were some left . some were super short, some were half way. yea horrible..ever since then I have no used this =(
I've heard so many things about this lush curler that I need to get it soon!
