BROWSER BRUSH ON BROW KIT! DRUGSTORE DEAL THURSDAYS!
Gigi here with a true DD!
Well-groomed, fuller eyebrows are making a comeback (think of a toned-down Brooke Shields here). Last year, an instructor from a modeling school spoke to my female students and I recall her saying: “Teens and very young women often look unnatural when they enhance their brows; as women age, they look unfinished if they don’t.” Many cosmetic companies are offering products including stencils and powder or tinted gels to create the perfect arch. Unfortunately, brows are still often ignored, although they are key to a manicured, sophisticated look. When color is skillfully applied and brows are in place, eyes take on a gorgeous, refined look and act as the ultimate “finishing touch” for your makeup and face, like a frame for a painting. Ignoring brows is like finding and wearing the perfect shoes and grabbing the completely wrong purse as you dash out the door. Unfortunately, many women are clueless as to how to work with their brows. I’m hooked on something that makes it easy: NYC’s “Brow Buster.” NYC sells workable, affordable beauty products for all, and this is one of their most innovative, effective items. The diminutive kit provides brow shades in blonde or brunette, setting wax, and tiny tweezers. What more could you want for around $4.00? I’m especially impressed that wax is included, as I’ve used a bit of damp soap or clear mascara in the past and it is uncomfortable when they dry. I’m all about saving money, so read on for tips for achieving a polished look.
Directions for use? Begin with removing unwanted, straggly hairs and use small scissors to cut necessary ones that are becoming unruly. Over-zealous plucking can be quite risky, as eyebrows do not always grow back, much to the chagrin of women who have eliminated theirs by mistake. Since you may cause permanent removal, work slowly and with care. If you tweeze after a shower or place a warm, moist towel over them beforehand, your pores will open and hair is removed with less effort and “ouch!” The key is to work with your natural brow contour, not against it. One method to discover your own unique brow shape is to hold a pencil vertically against your nose. Begin tweezing superfluous hair outside of the area. Rotate the pencil to the end of your eye—that’s where tweezing and color should end unless you are aiming to copy Cleopatra’s extreme style. I love Revlon's magnifying mirror it's enormously helpful and sold in drugstores (Where else? I live in them!).Your goal is to enhance brows and not design new ones. Though tweezers are included in this kit and come in quite handy, I prefer to rely on those made by Revlon or Tweezerman.
Choose one of the hues NYC offers—blonde or brunette. Makeup artists generally agree that these should be as close to your natural hair color as possible or even a shade or two lighter to “open” the eye area (thus, NYC’S blonde flatters me even though my hair is auburn and would work for those with a deeper hair hue). The tones in this kit are appropriate for the majority of women. I’ve used gel tints, but powder allows for more control and flawless application. Use the small stiff-bristled brush to lightly apply color with gentle, feather-like motions. Overwhelming, dark brows are gaudy and unnatural. The wax keeps your brows tame and in shape during long days and into the night, and NYC’s compact provides a good amount of both products. Brushing brows nearly straight up before using wax imparts a “wide-awake” look, even if you’re dragging after having only two hours of sleep. Isn’t one of the purposes of makeup deception? What others don’t know won’t hurt them . .

I am obsessed with eyebrows. I follow the Anastasia gospel that brows frame a face and create a beautiful architecture. For years, and I mean years, I have been a devote Benefit Browzings user. Typically, I go for the light color. The NYC brow kit intrigued me and for $4 bucks, how could I pass it up? It took some serious searching but finally I tracked it down at my local RiteAid, which usually never carries anything that I'm looking for. I picked up the blond kit and gave it a whirl. At home in the harsh lighting of my bathroom, the color looked great but I was mortified that as soon as I went outside the color went horribly wrong in natural lighting. My boyfriend, always mindful of not insulting my beauty experiments asked what I did differently to my brows. (Note, he knows how sensitive I am about brows.) The color looked a little orange/rust like, not blond. I'm wondering if I should breakdown and buy a different color eye shadow and try it out with the NYC wax. For now I'm still using tried and true Benefit. The NYC product isn't bad, especially considering the price. I'm willing to try it again, only this time with a lighter powder.
OMG...brows....the dreaded "B" word for sure! Mine are sparse, scraggly, and basically the bane of my existance,LOL!I shall pick up this little gem and give it a whirl,I'd kill to have those perfectly-groomed and sexy browsthat are effortless for many and I think your fabulous product-review will help! Currently,I use MAC brow pencil in "Strut",the best shade I have found for a redhead with a brush over oftheir brow-powder in "Auburn"...I also have never had luck with the "Anastaia" line but know many love it.It's hard for a redhead out there...
I saw this brow kit at Target, after I had gotten the Urban Decay kit and thought to myself darn! I just dropped $20 on UD, and this stuff is only $4! I do love my UD though, and it does come with the most awesome magnifying mirror so you can see every last brow hair! I'm a fanatic when it comes to brows too. I am forever inspecting and plucking mine daily. I recently went on vacation with family and managed to pin my 14yr. old niece down! Virgin brows here I come! It took alot of time and a few thousand cries later, and I got the most glorious before and after pictures! Once I figure out how to get them from my phone to my computer I can post them here! I am now known as the "Brow Guru"! Now that she has fab brows I'll have to get some of this for her! Thanks for the great post Gigi!
hey i could afford this! i am obsessed with my brows too! i actually like several of nyc products! i am going to look for this for my travel kit! carol b
Vexy, I feel you on the sneezing!! That happens to me too...I wonder why? I also ignore my brows far too often. I am making a mental note to start taking better care of my "eye-framers"!
I fail brows. There, I said it. I am so bad with tweezing and maintaining my brows, it's kind of horrifying. Mine are really naturally thick with not much of a shape to them, so they look like furry caterpillars crawling around above my eyes. I get them waxed or threaded every so often, but only for special occasions. Unfortunately, I have a strange reaction when I use tweezers. Even though I've tried icing my brows, opening my pores, and every other trick in the book, tweezing makes me sneeze. It's the weirdest thing, but as soon as I start plucking, I start sneezing; and the sneezing continues for a good five minutes after that, off and on! But this is such a fab drugstore deal. My mom has almost no brows, they're so sparse, and she's always on the lookout for products that give her a nice, natural brow. I may have to pick her up one of these as a part of her beauty birthday gift in a few weeks!
I have been a fan of Urban Decay's Brow box with pommade and two shades for ulitmatematch-your-own-color. It's a great little kit too but much more expensive. Given theprice of gas lately I'm glad to see there is a similar option out there that won't break the bank. I've never been able to handle gels or eyebrow mascara's as they inevitably start to itch and harden. I tend to talk with my eyes (as well as my hands...I'm VERY animated) and so every time I'd start to have an in depth conversationand my eyebrows would arch up I'd feel the hair crunch. UG! The wax doesn't feel likethis as long as you don't apply it heavily. My daughter is entering the age of needingto add brows to her regime and UD is too expensive...I'll have her give this a try!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
I would give this a try.... because it includes a powder. I'vefound that just a lil dark brown eyeshadow applies w/a light touch and an eyeliner brush works WONDERS for me (pencils dont do it & neither do brow polishes, my brows are too sparse). And this is compact w/everything included... very cool. Thank you for the review!
Expert tip: (I learned this from a Smashbox artist) If you have naturally strong brows theat maybe are a little sparse, then you should add the the colored powder first and then the wax to set it. If your brow are thin, or weakly shaped, you can ad the wax first to create a "stencil" for the shape that you go back and fill in the powder so that way the powder has something to stick to.

I am obsessed with my eyebrows. To a degree that even my husband noticed my obsession. I may occasionally go out of the house without foundation on, but i ALWAYS fill in my brows. I feel like I look all scraggly without doing it. This sounds like a great kit that I may have to pick up. I'm always on the hunt for new brow products. I wasn't very impressed by the Anastasia stuff at Sephora, and for a while was using another drug store product -- L'Oreal eyebrow pencils, which come in a set of 2 so its easy to match your color. I've recently been using a Korres pencil I picked up that I'm liking, but it may be time to move on from pencils since if I'm in a hurry I sometimes end up with that, well, penciled-on-eyebrow look. Not good. Thanks for the rec, Gigi!
Right now this is at Rite Aid for a whole stinkin' dollar. That's right, they're clearing it out so the price has been lowered to 'ridiculously cheap'. Pick it up if you have a chance!
Thanks Ollie, I am so there. Good tip! Have you tried it?
I fill in my brows everyday. This is a great inexpensive item to purchase. How cute it even comes with a brush.
