EYE-DO'S! MASCARAS OF THE MOMENT! SATURDAYS AT SEPHORA!
Katie the resident Saturday's at Sephora resident here to tell you how to make your peepers pop!
I always tease one of my coworkers Dalone (dscute) about her Mascara of the Month. She becomes obsessed with one mascara at a time usually and sells it almost exclusively to anyone she can get to listen! Although, to her credit she usually picks some good ones! So this week I thought that I would share with you my seven favorite mascaras (one for every day of the week)...some of the moment...some classics...and see what I got! Now keep in mind I currently own well over ten different mascaras and picking five required much discernment! I can't really put them "order" because I use different mascaras for different purposes and to achieve different effects so don't think I'm playing favorites!
Smashbox Bionic Mascara: I love how soft and feather this ionic formula leaves my lashes feeling. Aloe, silk, and wheat proteins also soften and condition. And you can work up some Major MAJOR volume with this little baby!
Diorshow Blackout: This mascara is really the blackest of the black. I'm a very dark brunette so I feel like the extra blackness of this really makes my eyes pop that much more. Plus the kohl formula is much creamier than the original Diorshow. So it doesn't dry out as quick. Also the brush is a little bit slimmer and easier to wield.
Sugar DoubleWink: If you don't mind an extra step, this double ended mascara is for you. It also gives a soft, feather effect (Crusty lashes are a large pet-peeve of mine. Plus both ends are a full-size tube so really its two in one. You can wear them separate or together. One is a lengthener and one is volumizing. This is a super bargain, in my humble opinion!
Givenchy Eye-fly: Here I go again with the soft and feather effect... but, the volume that you achieve with the Eye-fly is monumental! I love the sleek Givenchy packaging too!
UrbanDecay Skyscraper: This has been a longtime favorite. They were so innovative and they made the multi-dimensional brush way before DiorShow Unlimited ever thought of it. One side of the brush is flat for really building on some length while the bristled side can be used to add volume. Please note though, that really this is mostly a length builder.
Cargo Better-than-waterproof: I am generally VERY wary of waterproof mascaras. I don't want them to run but I wan' them to come off when I say come off! This is the same formula as their Texas Lash and its recently accrued cult following, but waterproof. I love how it really doesn't come off in the swimming pool but if you get a little cleanser or makeup remover on it it turns into gummy flakes that peel right off! And you don't loose 3/4 of your lashes in the process! It's genius.
Sephora Brand Triple Action Mascara: This is a great standby. It lengthens, volumizes, and curls. Doesn't flake or creep down and give you raccoon eyes. And is a lovely $12.
What are all your "mascara's of the moment"?

and siknik... i do the shimmy w/my mascara brush also. i'm also a big fan of the safety pin lash separation technique (a tweezerman tweezer also works too)
I for sure can agree with the Diorshow Blackout. It owns every other mascara I've ever used and does everything! It lengthens, it volumizes, it darkens, it thickens. It straight up makes you look like you are wearing false eyelashes. I'm actually wearing it in my profile picture. I never used to be much of a mascara person, nor did I feel spending a lot of money on it was worth it and would just buy the drugstore staples like Maybelline Greatlash or Covergirl LashExact but Diorshow changed my mind. I haven't used the waterproof yet, does anyone know if it comes off easy once you wash your face?
Another fan of Too Face's Lash Injection here. I have it in all three colors, and love every equally. I've tried so many different brands, and each time, I am never able to find something that compairs to Lash Injection. Every time I stray, I find myself looking like a raccoon... It can be cumbersome to remove, but I think I've finally found a safe way of removal that works for me, which is to use an eye makeup remover, and then to use my face wash on it.
oh gosh, more mascaras i need to try. i can't resist mascaras, especially when at sephora, where they have them in that great display and i feel like i need one of each. in the past, i had a brief affair with diorshow, but we grew apart and i've been in a long-term relationship chanel inimitable for a while now. that said, i'm currently playing around with too faced lash injection, and i agree with mjsred, it really packs a punch. my sister has been raving about the fiberwig also and the whole teeny fiber thing intrigues me. ah, i have such a fickle heart.
One of my many weird habits is that I’ve found I HAVE to wipe off the mascara wand with a tissue before using it. No matter what kind of mascara and especially with a brand new tube. Otherwise I end up with a huge spiky mess. So it never made sense to spend much on something I was going to waste. I confessed this to a particularly sweet girl in Sephora and she told me about “tube” mascara. She suggested Kiss Me and kept saying “if you don’t like it, just bring it back.” This stuff is GREAT! I’ve heard tube mascara mentioned on MM, it didn’t sink in that it was so different than regular mascara. I used it for the first time yesterday and by the end of the day, I didn’t have a grey cast around my eyes and getting it off it didn’t trash my lashes and eyes the way waterproof mascaras do. If you are oily and/or dealing with humidity, this is so worth a try. I just with I could get a hold of an empty tube of the same product so I could get more control of the amount of “stuff” on the brush.
Yes! I've been waiting for a mascara review! Now we just need a Drugstore Deal Mascara review! When I have the money... my favorite is Fresh by Supernova, I went into Sephora and begged for a great mascara and this mascara adds volume, is pitch black, and gives length. I've been stopped and asked if I have fake eyelashes on! If Sephora didn't recommend the Fresh I was originally going to purchase and try the Dior Blackout (which I'm still a little curious about). When I'm in a medium budget level (haha) I do enjoy Clinique's pick of mascara, either the Deep Impact or the light blue one, I forget the name, but they give that feather affect I love. However, I'm tight for cash as a college student and I've already bought 2 drugstore mascaras and I hate them both. I tried Maybelline's full and soft and then Maybelline's new Green one with the bendy brush, define a lash? I think? With all the drug store mascara's I've been buying and hating, I might as well save up to try one of these new ones or resort back to my $25 favorite... GREAT POST!
Mascaras are a funny thing for me...I just DON'T have great looking lashes. No matter what I use they seem to look pretty much the same. I've tried cheapies like Great Lash and HATED it (but it works GREAT on my full and long lash friend because its so thin it doesn't clump up on her) and really expensive brands like Mineresse and Chanel (haven't tried Diorshow yet...hum). Anyway, no matter how cheap or expensiveI always end up back to Loreal Voluminous. As a DD...I can comb through my lashes with the thick fluffy brush, add length and volume without too much clumping and it comes off easily with my makeup remover. BTW...I wear the waterproof version during the summer because I swim a lot. Mary Kay's Creamy Cleanser 2 works GREAT as a non-greasymakeup remover and gets ALL of the waterproof without too much torture on my eyes).I know that lashes make all the difference in opening and framing your eyes...and I keep trying the expensive one's...but Voluminous just keeps me coming back.
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
@sammy: I have that same habit too! I've always felt the need to wipe off "extra" mascara off the wand with a tissue. And it does seem like such a waste...maybe I should try out tube mascara. I'm loving all the suggestions in this thread! I have long eyelashes (blonde), that always get comments when I wear any kind of mascara. But unfortunately, I have yet to find a mascara that I LOVE and will stick with. The cheap Great Lash is horrible - makes my lashes all stick together in big globular chunks, which is great for the Tammy Faye lookalike contest. For days, though, I much prefer the more feathery "all natural" look. I'm currently using Max Factor's 2000 calorie. I'm on the boat with that one -- I think the auburn may be the best color for me, but they don't sell it at Kmart (only brown and rich black). I may have to order it online and try it out. The rich black is great for night, and I've been using the brown during day. I've used Diorshow in the past, and hated how it dried out and became all flaky within a couple weeks. Maybe I should try Diorshow Black since it's creamier and hopefully won't dry out as fast? (I love how it looks on siknik4prez!) And thanks to all the suggestions in this thread I'm definitely going to try out the Too Faced Lash Injection! I also should probably break my habit of the safety pin and invest in a metal eyelash comb...hmmm..
I just couldn't resist this follow up. If you're shopping around for a mascara, check out Sephora's Lash Stash. Seven mini mascara's for $28, including Benefit A Little Bit BADgal Lash, Blinc Kiss Me, LORAC Publicity Stunt, Smashbox Bionic Mascara, Stila Multi-Effect Mascara , Sephora Brand Lash Plumper, and a Too Faced Lash Injection in Black.
i just love love LOVE mascaras.... they are just SUCH an essential and doublethek i also have tried the definealash (ugghh... couldnt STAND it) BUT as far as drugstore deal masacaras... i adore maybelline lash discovery... nomatter WHAT mascara i buy... i always wind up going back to it. altho to be completely honest... diorshow blackout sounds like something i NEED to try, i've been jonesing to try diorshow... but blackout sounds like it's more my speed (denser black color... c'mon i'm a rocker... that just SCREAMS to me & i'm also a screamer when i sing soooo) yeah... i'm all up in diorshow blackoutsface right now...thats right. terrific review, i think everyone loves mascaraand while different formulas work for different people... it's great to hearthe preferences of others.
Miss Bobbie- No, I was asking if the Diorshow waterproof comes off okay when you wash your face?
LOL - Vexy, I believe LWS (Light Wallet Syndrome) or MCCD (Melting Credit Card Disorder) both seem to be real perils of spending much time on Megs. I’m pretty safe in stating that my cosmetics budget quadrupled... or more. Before it’s over, I’m sure I’ll be in rehab - but I’ll look good when I check in!
I’ve tried DiorShow and it is a great mascara - in fact the comment I received was “You’re eyes look great... but don’t you think false eyelashes are a bit much for daytime?” Forget the steamer trunks under my eyes... I have long, thick eyelashes and my eyes are the colour of blue that elicits comments like “My God your eyes are blue!” from complete strangers (usually in larger cities like Chicago or Seattle). And so, I never wear DiorShow at a funeral, church, or unless I’m in a big town or going out at night. By going out, I mean something a bit nicer than eating fried catfish at the Tav with Farmer Tom. For everyday, I use CoverGirl Hydrofuge Waterproof. And I don’t usually coat the tips of my lashes - upper or lower. Roxtarchic - rather than using a safetypin, I’d highly recommend getting a metal eyelash comb. MUCH, much safer and glides through eyelashes to separate nicely.
Thanks! I swear, I was just thinking yesterday that a mascara review is what we needed! I love to try different mascara's and I haven't actually tried either of the ones you mentioned, so I'm gonna have to do that! I would have to say that my two favorite standbys have always been BADgal Mascara by Benefit and good old Great Lash by Maybelline!!! Seriously, that stuff is just the best and only $5.00!! If I wasn't so into trying new products, I'd probably only ever buy Great Lash. I just bought a tube of Imju Fiberwig a couple of days ago that I'm really LOVING!!! It has little fibers that add length like you wouldn't believe and its isn't clumpy at all. Its a Sephora exclusive! But you already knew that! :)
Those teens! My 14yo loves to seek out the good stuff in my makeup drawer as well. Kate, you and I both share the same distain of stiff feeling lashes and waterproof formulas. My sparse lashes need all the volume and length they can get, but sometimes mascaras add length, but cause my lashes to clump and look less dense, almost spider-webby meets Tammy Faye (may she RIP). I am definitely going to have to try the Smashbox or Sugar Mascara, they sound so wonderful. I am a big fan of tarte's lights, camera, lashes and Lola's Mascara. Wonderful post Kate!
I LOVE this review!!! Mascaras are such a hard item to choose because there are SO many out there to choose from!I agree that "Diorshow" rocks,it's the best I have found overall but the pricetag and the fact that it does tendto dry out more quickly than some others keep me away from it on a monthly basis...Currently I am in lust with "Too Faced Lash Injection!" It's got a plush-brush and when I put on two coats,it really does mimicthe look of falsies! My husband commented in the grocery that he "really wondered if I needed fake lashesto select intelligently select some sushi on Fri..." BOY...did I clue HIM in,LOLROF!This mascara is that good! Thanks for all the great new products to try and for stearing us down the lash-path to perfection!
I agree with Shelley. I am loving Fiberwig. Which isn't to say I can't love many mascaras at a time. However, since my 18 year old decided to snatch my Chanel Inimitable (by-passing the Fiberwig, Smashbox and Clinique tubes also in my drawer as she is apparently related to royalty and can use only the finest brands that she finds in moms' drawer) which is probably my all time way overpriced favorite, I can say the Fiberwig adds length, volume and nice color.
Kate, late here chiming in but I LOVE mascara. Its the one thing I always wear. My tried and true mascara is Chanel Cils a Cils in Navy. I love it. Makes my lashes long, no clumping and the perfect color for me. That said, theydon't sell it at Sephora which is where I usually am so I also am using Benefits Bad Gal Blue and Cargo's navy. Likethose both a lot but when it all comes down to it, nothing makes my lashes longer than the Chanel. Its my fav!
I like Covergirl LashBlast for night & Lash Exact for day, but... Lash Stash, huh??? Dang it, indianafarmwife, now I'm gonna have to go BACK to Sephora ;) It's such a far drive... thank goodness gas prices are coming down! It really seems like our lashes are about as different as the hair on our heads... who would have thunk?
Oh and one more thing-I feel that the zig-zag is the best trick ever. You know, put the wand at the base of your lashes and start going upward and when you get to the middle start zig zagging, left and right back and forth, your way to the top and when you get to the tops of your lashes keep doing it to the tops. It literally doubles the length of your lashes and keeps all the clumps away. Does anyone else love this trick?
yeah... i HAVE one of those metal eyelash comb thingies... but it's never where i think it was (ok so now i'll get another one haha)... i've alsoused the mascara brushes you get at mac....or sephora... to help seperate those lashes that get clumped together... i dont go weilding a safety pin like it's a dagger or anything... hehehe. i also use those brushes to blendmy eyebrow shadow sometimes too! works like a charm... oh & now i've added lash injection to the list also! (yeah, i'm gonna need a second job & start shipping things to my office so mydh doesnt get all 'what'dya order now" on me)! hahah
I use Dior Diorshow Waterproof for my everyday mascara, though I've been itching to try the Blackout. And I agree with indianafarmwife- putting contacts in is hard enough! I don't want a safety pin anywhere near my eye, especially with as clumsy as I am. I find that my lash comb works perfectly. I have pretty long, thick lashes as well, but they have a tendency to stick together, which is why a lash comb is invaluable to me. I've also wanted to try Covergirl's LashBlast Mascara after hearing so many good things about it, but now I have a whole list of mascaras I need to try! Oh, my poor wallet.
This is a great topic as we all love mascaras! I have spent more money than I even want to think about on mascara. I just love trying new ones out, even though I don't think my eyelashes ever make a very dramatic improvement. I was cursed with short, straight, thin blonde eyelashes. YUCK. I don't think I ever leave the house without mascara on! horrifying! My favorites recently are Fresh Supernova, DiorShow Unlimited, and Maybelline Full N Soft. Maybelline is a staple for me, I always have one on hand. THeir waterproof version is excellent during summers seeing as I spend most days off work by the pool (what else can you do when its 115 degrees out?!) I always seem to love Dior's mascaras right at first but after a few weeks they seem to dry up and become clumpy, which is such a bummer when you pay so much for something! I have tried and loved Givenchy Eye Fly. I think I will be trying the Smashbox or Sugar next!
An old toothbrush is a great lash separater and softener too. Nikstik - I think the Diorshow waterproof comes of reasonably easy with a makeup remover. Much easier than say, the TooFaced. I've heard some crazy stories about getting that stuff off before! I suppose I should have followed up with my favorite eye-makeup removers! I am currently using the Caudalie Cleansing water - mostly because I have two bottles of it that are taking forever to work my way through. Bosica's makeup-breakup cleansing oil is fabulous and so are any of the Clinique makeup removers.

I'm a big fan of mascaras! While my mother and other women wouldn't go out without lipstick, I would dash to the bathroom and put on mascara if my house was on fire before evacuating. This review gives me some more to try! Right now I am using Trish McEvoy curling mascara (purchased for me by my mom). I think it is supposed to be one of those "tube"-like mascaras, which means it lasts in heat and humidity (and having just worn it today in a triathlon, the ocean)....however, it can be very drying and I find that it can clump easily during application which later (after drying) can't be separated and must be removed. I do like the volume it gives and definition when not clumping. I don't know that I would use it every day but a yes for weddings, the beach, etc. And as a Texas girl I do have to say sometime nothing beats a tube of good ole MaryKay mascara (say what you will about the company) for everyday, no flaking, great volume, stays moist.
I love the color of Diorshow Blackout too. My other two favorites are Chanel Inimitable waterproof and Covergirl LashExact. And siknik4prez are you asking if LashExact Waterproof comes off easy? I'm using it right now and it doesn't at all. It's one of the hardest mascaras to get off because since its cheaper it makes my lashes stiffer. I have to use a lot of eye makeup remover to get it off.
I use Lashblast, it works really well and is CHEAP!
Right now I am using AVON SuperShock and I love it! Although, I just found out today that they are no longer carrying the shade brown/black so I am off to find something new....I am sad though considering it was only $8 a tube!
♥Sandra♥
Urban decay big fatty mascara is great,it builds volume without making lashes spikey, also avon have a double ended mascara with fibres on one side and mascara on the other I got it in a brown/black shade and it really works.
PotionPrincess♥
out of all of these I can only swear by the DiorShow

I'm always on the lookout for a new mascara. I've heard great things about DiorShow. I prefer to use tried and tested drugstore brands such as Cover Girl, L'oreal and Maybelline. I've heard good things about Lumene Blueberry Curl mascara as well.
right now my fave mascara is Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara was top rated on the http://www.beautybible.com/ I want to try a natural one though..so am still looking
makeup makeup makeup!!!!!!!
I like the BADgal mascara by Benefit Cosmetics and L'oreal Bare Naturale. The L'oreal Bare Naturale is probably my most favorite. It is really black and you can get some BIG volume and length. Plus, natural ingredients. Ladies, give it a try.
A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.

Every month I buy s new mascara. I have never found one that works just perfect. I want my cake and I want to eat it too. I want length and volume. I want beautiful full eye lashes...and I don't want clumping. I think I may try the Sugar double wink next.
My scrapbook shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/elle71125
Right now I am using the Covergirl eyelights for brown eyes. I love the formula, hate the sparkles. Looks just strange. But my all time fave mascara is Cliniques High Impact Mascara in black or brown. I have fine lashes and this really thickens and extends them without looking fake. And it is vegan, so if you are looking for cruelty free, this is the way to go! I am interested in trying the Urban Decay mascara though. I love Urban Decay products.
angelina looks fab as always.out of all the mascaras listed, I've only tried diorshow...It didn't work as well on me as expected, It felt heavy, it did volumnise but i didnt' like how it was settled on my lashes.kinda like.. spider legs.
My new Ebay Store: cossiepieMy blog: http://lazyscorner.blogspot.com/
i have yet to try any of the bigger brands, so i stick to my good ol drugstore brands....ive pretty much tried most..and for me, i find Rimmel works best. Specifically two rimmel mascaras : 1) Lycra Lash Extender & 2) Sexy Curves. I already have super duper long eyelashes, and the Lycra one like thripled it, tho its not great for anything else other than length. Sexy curves is my new fav. it lengthens n volumizes .. exactly what ive been looking for.
oooh i want to try the sephora one!! cheap and sounds like it might work :D the curl part really was what caught my attention. my lashes are stick striaght and actually point DOWN, so i always look for a mascara that will hold a curl.
Aaahhh! This is my dream review...I could dance! I'm really into mascara. I just printed off the list, so I can keep it in my purse and do a check-list and see these in person) mjsred... I'm going to check out the one you mentioned above: Too Faced Lash Injection
I'm loving Maybelline's Define-A-Lash with a coat of Benefit's BadGal blue over it :)
I so wanna try the Diorshow mascara! Looks so good, along with the Lancome Hypnose!
I am still on the perfect volumnizing mascara. My lashes are so thin...I want the fake eyelash effect!!
I prefer covergirl lash blast. my eyelashes were seriously touching my eyebrows!
i love this
I have used Dior Show and loved it for a while but now I bought Lancome's Hypnose!
