SPRING SHADES - SATURDAYS AT SEPHORA!

Every Saturday Kate2004rock brings you the best of Sephora as only an insider can!
I hope you all missed me on your "trip" to South Coast Plaza last week! So I'm back, better than ever, and bringing you the most important Spring makeup trends for 2008! I decided to look into it because 1) I'm a fashion-a-holic. 2) I had so much fun researching the post when I did the same for the Fall last autumn! So here goes!
Eyes: There wasn't an eye to be found on the Spring '08 runways that didn't have a subtle golden highlight on the inside corner of the eyes. You'd be surprised how much it really brightens up the eye area and makes your eyes pop. A couple really useful tools come to mind when trying this trick: Benefit Gilded pencil is a fat pencil with the perfect tangerine-gold (not too yellow!) and is great in the eye corners, on the brow or cheek bones. Also the Cargo Eye Bronzer can be used in the corners, along the lash line, or even as a shadow if you want. That girl with the red lips, a Bottega Veneta model, has really got the look right!
Second big trend: Pencils out. Liquid liners in. I promise you they really aren't that scary once you practice a bit! Plus you can't beet the super-defined, sleek look that liquid liner gives you...and doesn't run the risk of smudging in the least! The best trick is not not even bother to attempt to make one smooth line all the way across your eye. Do it in small dashes and "connect the dots". Make sure to pull your lid flat with one hand so you're not trying to hit a moving target! Urban Decay makes excellent, ergonomic liquid liners in a myriad of colors. Vincent Longo has ....black and brown I think, but the brush is super fine so its much more goof proof. If you really don't like liners - a gel works great too: Laura Mercier, Stila Smudge Pots, whatever you fancy!
Lips: If you didn't believe me that lipstick was back last fall, I hope you will this spring. Think flower petals. Think creamy. Think opaque. No brooding mournful colors here. Lancome has that designer lipstick series, limited edition called Pixel pink. See if you can find it. I'll pay anyone to get me a tube. It's gorgeous - you may have seen our good friend 38goingon19 ogling it on her blog Mythbusterbeauty! It's caused me severe envy. If you can't manage to get your paws on it: I've come up with a few alternatives for ultra-hip lips this spring: Vincent Longo's SPF 20 Wet Pearl lipstick in Cherry Lane (candy pink); Make Up For Ever Lipsticks in either Fluorescent Blue Pink 202 or Orange Rust 217. Dior Rouge Lipsticks in VIP Pink 365. Smashbox Lipstick in Sweet (Creamy Pink) or Beautiful (Creamy Peach). I could go on and on. Lipstick is a wonderful thing. To make sure your lipstick isn't flakey or bleed-y or nasty. Make sure lips are exfoliated before hand (Your Sara Happ lip scrub or the Sugar Frxtion exfoliator/balm combo). Take a cue for the pink-lipped Valentino model in the pics.
Face: Bronze is back girls. But not like you got sunburned, or spilled a whole bottle of tanner on your face. You just want a kiss of sun. The Guerlain Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzing Powder comes in two shades (Blondes, and Brunettes) and It really is one of my Favorite Bronzers I've ever used. That or the Fresh Here Comes the Sun Palette. A little bronze goes a long way! Try even just using it as a blush and nowhere else - its a remarkable sophisticated look.

Kate, at your suggestion I wore my Benefit Gilded pencil in the inner eye corners of my eyes yesterday -- I LOVED it! I probably need to refine my skills/sharpen my pencil, but I thought it was really bright and fun without being WAY out there...I wore it with similar eye makeup (golds/bronzes), and I thought it really complemented well. Just wanted to share that I tried and liked it! Thanks for the tip - I've always had trouble deciding what to do with that pencil!
Yay spring!! It's only 17 degrees here this morning, but the sun is shining and this topic has me in a great mood! I don't know if it's a new or old product, but my latest Sephora find has me in a great springy mood, also. It's Dior's 4 color blush/bronzer in Sunrise Party - it's the pink family - they also have the peach family - and they're both gorgeous. Perfect colors to swipe all together for quite a glow on the cheeks - and to highlight. RE: the eyes...Lancome makes a great brush to highlight the inner corners with eyeshadow-it's their super thin and brisk tiny paint brush looking thing - the number is 14 on my brush. It makes doing that super easy...but those pencils sound great too. Finally, I have always gone back to liquid liner after trying every great new creamy, easy-glide pencil out there. They go on great now, but even with using UDPP, my pencil liner ALWAYS runs under my eyes - the only thing that keeps the runs away perfect, all day, every time is liquid liner. Been using it since about 16 yrs old, so I fancy myself quite the expert. If you have trouble getting it on, here's how I do it: Starting with the right eye, I hold the liner in my right hand. The key is to balance yourself with your elbows and get close to the mirror. I balance my weight on my left elbow and hold the bottle in my left hand, lean right up to my bathroom mirror and balance my right elbow on the mirror. Then just aim at your right eye and it goes on flawlessly, cuz your hands and arms can't shake. Then just switch up and do your left - it works!
Kyrss-my god, I can't even believe your husband COULD walk into a Sephora with you! My hubby's head would explode, literally. We can barely do a drug or grocery store together. When I do my annual pilgrimage to the Sephora in Vegas (the Venetian) I tell him to meet me at X in 2 hours. He's always like "2 HOURS?!" Yes, 2 hours. Now go drink beer and gamble. Manhunt looks beautiful. Straight on my to buy list, thanks!IFW-yeah, it's a bummer when a Sephora doesn't have what you're looking for. Cause it is so much better when you can see things in person, not to diss the online shopping, but you know what I mean. That model looks like her lower inner eyelid is lined with white. This always looks so great in photos. Personally, I can't get the hang of it in person. Stila cherry crush is worth an online order. I'm loving it big time.
DDoll, if you're loving the red-orange, you kinda need to get NARS Manhunt. I scored it yesterday and it's fabulous. It's not a harsh red-orange, either. It's almost a coral/red-orange on me. It goes on a little sheer, too, which is nice because I don't enjoy anything too heavy in Spring and Summer. I swear, the hubby was going to kill me during our Sephora adventure yesterday. I HAD to get the Stila Cherry Crush stain, the NARS Manhunt, and the new Tarte Health Couture set. I've never seen someone have an aneurism before, but after yesterday with the hubs, I think I have a pretty good idea what it would look like :) As for keeping the lips smooth---THANK YOU, Kate, for putting the gentle reminder about lip exfoliation up. There's nothing worse than seeing a well-put together woman with chunky lips. It can ruin perfect makeup. I love using my Fresh Sugar Face Polish. I'll rub some on my lips and then use one of those baby washcloths (the kind that are super soft that are sold especially for babies)to wipe it off. I'll put a little Rosebud lip balm on, let it set for a few minutes, and then put my lipstick on. You'd be amazed at the difference between putting it on dry lips.
I’m with you on the pink DD. Barbie always scared me - maybe it wasn’t the unobtainable figure... maybe it was really the penchant for things pink. Also have to agree with you on the Laura Gellar products. Was in a REAL LIVE SEPHORA last week. (Farmer Tom was amused at the mechanics of the whole store.) Unfortunately, no Napoleon Perdis. No Fresh Sugar Shag. Not even Stila in CherryCrush. None of those great recs for a start to red lips... Wound up with a Laura Gellar lip gloss (nice colour, nice staying power, nice texture). Someday, maybe I’ll attain the ability to wear opaque lipsticks with grace - I’ll probably be 70 or so by then - Oh well, thanks to an AM scrub with Suki, at least I don't have chunk-o-lip syndrome. I'm seriously eyeing the corner of the eye highlight, because the corner of the eye highlight IS something I can apply without looking “just too”. (LG WonderWand here I come!) Question: does the model on the right also have highlighter as an inner-eyelid-type liner?
I'm so glad Spring is upon us! Even is SOI Cal where it's always pretty nice, I'm longing for nicer. Although all the swimsuit catalogs are making me a bit nervous. But ahhh, makeup! Never have to lose 10 lbs to get in some lipstick. I'm loving the red lips on the model on the right, a very nice red-orange. That pink is scaring me a bit though. Another product that's good for that inner eye highlight is Laura Geller's Wonder Wand. I'm really liking her products. And I used the bronzer in my Fresh Island Reviere palette today inhonor if this post! I'm sure everyone at Home Depot (the only place I went) were very impressed.
Thanks for the amazing recommendations Kate and friends. Lancome's Pixel Pink will be available in retail stores after March 1st. I am sooo ready for the spring, this winter has been very long and we have had snow cover since early December! Bring on the bronzer, the bright cheery pink lip, the liquid liner, and some warmth!
I really need to take a trip to the US and get my butt over to Sephora...
DDoll---the hubs is pretty good about the Sephora thing. Except for the potential aneurism, that is. He'll even hold my purse and anything I intend to buy while I shop so I can have my hands free. He is a good man. He even gives me opinions and helps me make a final choice. He's my best girlfriend. I probably shouldn't have made him watch the "Project Runway" marathon yesterday, though. He's gonna leave me for someone named "Steve". As for the Manhunt, you won't be disappointed. I have a few similar shades, but I found the Manhunt to be worthy. IFW---HONEY! I'm so sad that you finally got to be in a Sephora and they had nothing. That's so disappointing! My condolences. *hugs* (Pssst...Cherry Crush is nice if you enjoy stains and it is really easy to apply. I also looked into the Fresh Sugar Shag lip gloss and wasn't that impressed. Hope that helps.)
These girls makeup are sooooo pretty ! :) ,
I really appreciate the morse code tip for liquid liner application! It has proved very good advice.
I like the second picture better.
I never usually care or go with trends, i always just do what i like. However it seems like this spring my usual look is actually quite in! I'm surprised! And i love the gold-highlight in the eyes, i'll definately have to give that one a go.Also am i the only person who finds liquid liner easier to use than pencil?
I agree with lillionfunnyface
i love this
I wish i lived in the us!!
