SHU UEMURA! SOUTH COAST PLAZA!

Welcome to Day Four of South Coast Plaza Week at megsmakeup.com! It’s Chichi, back with another fun filled shopping experience from our decadent day at the SCP. I just want to say “Thank You” once again to everyone involved in giving the ladies of megsmakeup such a fabulous day; from the SCP management office, to the heads of the companies we visited and especially our new friends working inside the stores who really rolled out the welcome mats for us. My last write up is on a company that is world renowned for their artistic and revolutionary make-up and accessories. I’m talking about the one and only Shu Uemura!

Believe it or not, I do not wear a lot of make-up on a daily basis. If however, you walked into my room and saw the piles of make-up, brushes and potions on my vanity and dresser, as well as the stacks of fashion magazines next to my bed, you would know that I am obsessed with make-up. I love it all, especially eye shadows, blushes, eyeliners and all of the fun parts of making up a face. Of course, I was already well versed with the legend of Shu Uemura and their iconic Eyelash Curler, as well as their vivid and amazing line of colors. Yet, I had never visited a Shu Uemura storefront. Let me tell you, walking into this mecca of make-up was almost a holy moment for me! As soon as we stepped into this well organized, jam-packed make up heaven, I know we were in the presence of greatness!

As we entered, we were warmly greeted by the fabulous Assistant Manager of Shu Uemura SCP, Alex as well as Make Up Artists Melina, Brittany and Levi who were our main guides into the world of Shu. The spectacular shop was designed to express the sophisticated simplicity and modernity of Shu Uemura’s minimalist packaging, (while) displaying a visually astounding color palette of individually sold makeup colors. I was almost overwhelmed by the array of choices in color and texture that were available for all customers to sample and test on themselves. However, after a run through of the boutique I quickly realized that all of the products were displayed in an easy to follow system. Eye shadows, liners, blushes, lipsticks and more were grouped together and displayed by color (lightest to darkest) and appropriately named so that you would know exactly what you were purchasing. For example, She Uemura offers their eye shadows in four separate finishes: Matte (M), Pearl (P), Iridescent (IR) and Metallic (ME). These letters (M, P, IR, ME) are listed before the shade color, so you’ll never have to guess at a colors finish. Plus, most eye colors are available in all four formulas, while blushes come in Pearl and Matte finishes. Simply genius!

Desertdoll and I had scheduled an appointment at Shu Uemura’s Legendary Lash Bar where Shu Uemura artists offer a unique Lash Styling service including the personal application of Shu Uemura’s more than 20 styles of false eyelashes from natural to dramatic. Additionally, this service includes a full face make-over using products from their huge selection of foundations, blushes, mascaras, eyebrow pencils and more. Of course, you get to walk away with your new false eyelashes as well as a wealth of application knowledge! This service does require a minimum purchase (details vary so check with your local Shu Uemura store). All six of us ladies were astounded to find that the whole team of Shu Uemura makeup artists had cleared time so that each of us could take part in the makeovers! Talk about VIP treatment!

While the lovely Melina worked her magic we discussed the latest offerings from Shu Uemura, The Rebirth Collection for Spring 2008. Unfortunately, this is the last line designed by the legendary founder, Shu Uemura, who passed away in December 2007. This pioneer of make up left us with one final and stunning collection of make up that is inspired by the purity, energy and innocence of the spring season. Mr. Uemura designed the collection ... using a combination of soft and vivid hues embellished with a unique and graceful leaf motif to communicate the revitalization of nature occurring at this time of year. All of the shades in this collection are unique, flattering and oh so pretty! The eye shadows are versatile as well. Each one can be worn alone, layered on top of cream eye shadow for added intensity, or as an eyeliner with a dampened brush.

Now onto the really fun stuff - the False Eylashes! If you just clicked that link, you will see that Shu Uemura offers an astounding selection of lashes for looks ranging from the all natural to the absolutely extravagant (see Solero in the right middle pic with her fantastically green lashes). Now, I love the look of false eyelashes but have always had difficulty applying them. I end up with crooked, gluey lashes instead of the flawless look Melina had (and she wore two lashes per eye). However, all is well as Melina imparted some wisdom to me. When you apply false eyelashes, do not look straight into your mirror, instead, place a hand mirror flat on a counter or your vanity. Then stand over it and look directly down into your mirror when applying the lashes. It’s such a simple trick, but it really works. Since that day, I’ve practiced with my Shu Uemura lashes and I am turning into a pro.

When the six of us, flawlessly made up creatures left Shu Uemura we were a sight to behold! (See bottom shot of the happy girls with the Shu staff). We not only walked out with our hand-picked new false eyelashes and beautiful faces, we received a goodie bag of Shu Uemura products as well! The products included in my bag of sunshine were:

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler What a treat to receive one of my most coveted items from all of Shu! The emblematic Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler featuring enhanced design and upgraded features for ultimate precision that delivers the perfect curl, including an upgraded silicone pad in a new "mushroom" shape provides a protective, stay-put edge for improved safety and optimum curl.

Rebirth Collection Eye Shadow in IR Earth Brown One of 5 limited edition eye colors for spring. This eye shadow gives one of the truest colors (from container to lid) I’ve ever used. The shadow is long lasting and crease-proof and the shade really makes my blue eye pop!

Rebirth Collection Eye Pencil - Aqua Flow Another limited edition product, the beauty of this eyeliner is that it contains three colors (light blue, grey and green) stacked into one pencil! The bright and fresh shades represent the calm flow of fresh spring dews.

Depsea Water Facial Mist This product really intrigued me during our visit, so I was pleased to find the relaxing Lavender scented bottle in my bag. This mist provides soft hydration for all skin types. The Depsea Water or “water from the depths of the sea” - is taken from the depth of the ocean where sunlight does not reach, at 320 meters. Pumped directly from the location, it is also bottled at the source, where the Shu Uemura manufacturing facility resides. Completely free of artificial color, natural aromatic extracts are then added to become lightly scented mists that rejuvenate and hydrate the skin, hair and body. It is also a key raw ingredient used in many of Shu Uemura makeup and skincare products.

High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil Enriched A wonderful multi-tasker this wash leaves my face completely clean (without drying it out) and removes make up (even waterproof!) It’s recommended for drier skin types (or those in dry climates) but it’s worked really well for me in the middle of winter. The High Performance comes into play when you see that it contains tomato extract and vitamin E for anti-oxidant protection, avocado oil for extra moisture and nourishment and bitter orange peel extract to help brighten the skin.

Are you ready to sidle up to the Shu Uemura lash bar? Maybe you’re already curling your lashes with their must-have curler. Let’s talk Shu Uemura!

You all look soooo good!! Yeah, I totally wish I'd been there after reading all the reviews. What a freaking day you women must have had!! Soooo much fun! I'm calling my girlfriends this week and we are going to plan a trip to the closest shopping haven near us! The closest I've been lately to that much product was in an airport. It was the type of shop that had a little of all the high end makeup brands. Boy was I pissed when I realized it was closed!!

Sorry ladies, we knew there would be some jealous issues. I'd feel the same way had I not been there. Believe us when we say we wish all of you could have joined us! Oh Shu, how do I love you? Let me count the ways...1. the packaging is just goregous, minimal, let's the incredible colors shine through, super durable too. 2.the colors themselves! The rebirth of spring line is so pretty, so fresh. The IR Brown shadow we got is perfect, deep with a hint of shimmer so it's neither matte nor disco ball. I also bought Glow on Tranquil Pink blush from the line, again-how can this be so perfect? Not too light, not too dark, not too shimmery-just flushed gorgeousness. And I couldn't resist getting another lipstick. I got Chocoalte Brown from the LE Muse line (designed by Gina, head of Shu artisitry and Madonna's makeup artist). So. Freakin. Pretty. It really compliments the above 2 colors for a night out. 3. The people!!! Oh, what a crew this is. From boutique manager Paulina, who I met last time but was unable to be there this day, to all the lovelies Chi lists in her post. A special shout to Levi, who did my makeup that day. He's so sweet, I could have sat and talked to him all day. I want to make him my best friend! And to boot, what an artist. He's got a real passion for makeup that shows in his work. (he's the cutie in the bottom photo, btw) All around, these people LOVE their line. And really, how could you not? I could keep counting the love all day, but I'll leave you with this (and maybe I shouldn't cause it was sold out already) Shu makes the best liquid eye liner in the business. So easy to apply, refillable pacakging (genius!) and it wears FOREVER. After our makeup application on our way to the next stop someone said "did they use the eyeliner on you?!" And we talked about it for 5 mins-how good it was, when was it going to be back in stock, how do we get it when it is. Amazing stuff. Yahoo for Shu!

I LOVED THAT WE ALL HAD SUCH A WONDERFUL TIME AT Shu uemura! It is all about the special experience that you walk away with.. creating memories that will last forever and you’ll tell your friends and family for years to come...such is a good life! Shu uemura was one of the gems that I was looking forward to visiting.. I always enjoy walking in there -it’s always a treat.. I love talking with the staff there. So upbeat and extremely helpful. Not once did I go in there that I didn’t walk out with a spritz of the DEPSEA WATER FACIAL MIST usually Levi would hit me with it.. I just love that refreshing feeling! So naturally I have a deep love for this product.. Let me tell you that it is made with the purest, most stable water on earth. Use anytime over the face, skin, or hair to revive spirits and provide hydration. This is not just your average run of the mil spritz either, it’s beyond unique. This water contains over 60 minerals to help enhance skin's moisture balance. Then, you have to put some of their DEPSEA MOISTURE REPLENISHING CREAM to make this even more wonderful..It’s an enriched, water-infused moisturizing cream that replenishes and nourishes skin. Great for those like me with dry tendencies. I loved it and you will love it too.. trust me, it ‘s awesome!

Jenlaw has stolen my sentiments. I was blase about Aveda, sad that I missed fresh, but the Shu Uemura? I am down right JEALOUS and ANGRY that I do not live in California to join you girls! Holy crap I am so jealous! I've been to the Shu store in Paris and I second every motion that Chichi raises. The minimalist packaging really simpflies makeup - while his line is so gi-normous that you could so some really complicated, fancy stuff with all of his colors and shades and finishes! His makeup brushes are to die for. The eye shadows are a dream. When I die, I want my room in heaven to be next to Mr. Uemura's.

I love the Cleansing Beauty Oil in premium A/I Hear me out. I had my fancy eyelashes with full makeup done awhile back and was promised that this would remove everything.. I was skeptical since I had a boatload of makeup.. I was proven wrong and was impressed that it worked so well. I remember Levi saying not to be afraid of the oil.. Good advise! It is luxuriously rich oil that gently removes makeup and impurities. It is infused with medicinal herbs such as chamomile and licorice root to soothe and smooth dry, sensitive skin like mine. It is ideal for people with damaged, dry or sensitive skin and that are looking for anti-aging benefitsNow, who ever heard of making pretty looking eye shadow? Well, shu uemura does and I’m not kidding. Five limited edition Pressed Eye Shadow shades inspired by the purity, energy, and innocence of spring. It’s got a a beautiful design in the actual pattet. I so din’t want to mess it up.. but I did and it looks awesome.. Please check out the website to see what I’m talking about.. Look under SPRING 2008 PRESSED EYE SHADOW. It comes in some gorgeous colors and can be layered on top of cream eye shadow for added intensity. Finish with an eye liner with a dampened brush.. there’s your hints right from the horses’ mouth!

I've always loved Shu Uemura and have been religiously wearing their blue liquid eye liner for years. Its tint is magnificent, it's swimming pool blue but turns out to be greenish under a certain type of lighting. You can imagine my excitement when we were informed that Shu Uemura was in our list of places to visit. I got so jealous when I saw the girls at the lash bar having their lashes done that I became a five year old that yells mine mine mine too! And they were sweet enough to do my lashes using that wonderful peacock lash style you see in the picture - and this experience made me love Shu Uemura even more! The tips they gave us on putting lashes on turned out to be so useful! I've become an eyelash freak now. Too bad they were out of my favorite liquid eyeliner when we were there. But I'll be back! Also, they told us that Shu Uemura has been using Japanese calligraphy pigments for their eye liners. No wonder they look so good!

All hail Shu! What a treat! My eyes never looked better-Thank-you so much to the makeup artist extraordinaire Alexander Peuchot. I love a great bar and the lash bar is where it's at, I can't recommend treating yourselfto their tips and tricks enough. Not only did my new lashes look fantastic but Alexander took the time to explainstep-by-step what he was doing so I could recreate the look on my own. The products we were sent home with aresheer luxury and the Rebirth Eye Collection in IR Brown is so gorgeous it looks like a piee of art and I really didn't want to disturb the glamorous pakage but one I did I was bowled over by the color! The deepsea refresher is amazing andthe balaning oil is fabulous at removing everything without leaving you with a stripped feeling. This line is amazingand of course we also got the cult favorite eyelash curler. I can't recommend this line and the gifted make-up artist that transformed us into fabulous divas!

I'm right with you jenlaw and kate. After the Big game on Sunday, I am sure Eli was asked the classic question, "You've just won the Super Bowl, what are you going to do now?" Well, he probably answered Disneyland. If I was asked the same question my answer would be, "I'm going to Shu Uemura at the South Coast Plaza!" Those false lashes are incredible. I have had my eyes on their cleaning oil and facial mist for a while, and I love that they don't add icky chemcial fragrances to it. Skincare products that smell like my Grandma's body powder (Jean Nate) really BUG me. Tell us more about it DD, please!

Blus Lee Lee says,

So I found out what happened to my wonderful Shu Uemura store here in LA. They packed up and moved to SCP and I don’t blame them after seeing how beautiful this shopping center is. I have been a huge fan of their cleansing oils for sometime now. At first I though use an oil to clean my face, won’t it leave it greasy feeling? Not at all, my face never got cleaner and was so soft afterwards. So when we received a bottle of cleansing oil I was on cloud nine!! And then I tried the DepSea Moisture Replenishing Cream, oh my gosh it’s like rubbing velvet all over your skin. I don’t know what is in the water they get deep in the sea but this moisturizer is like nothing else I’ve ever used, love it!! While I didn’t actually get my makeup done, I did run around with Pammy from one make up chair to another watching all the beautiful transformations going on. Oh okay so I did get Levi to touch up the old dark circles under the eyes. I loved the concealer and ended up buying it. What I do think about the packaging of it is that you can purchase other concealer colors and the packing attaches together. I’m going to get the green consealer next time because thank to some to strong retin a I have redness around my noise. I was also lucky enough to get one of their lipsticks in the Rouge Unlimited Red Collection. It’s such a pretty color, and I’m so sorry I can’t tell you what it is because the writing is so small on the bottom I can’t read it. And need I say more..........eyelash curler, I’ve died and gone to heaven
