I DON'T WEAR PERFUME! IS THIS YOU?

Tue, 02/05/2008 - 5:47pm
  • Miscellaneous

I had to remove the gift part, but trust me, it's a cool reason why I need to know if any of our members will let us know who they are and why they DO NOT wear perfume. Looking for our readers that are currently perfume-free!

Totally worth it for you to let me know! Get typing!

xoxo,

Meg

Me too. This is my first post here - great to meet everyone. I think I stopped because of the professional perception - not knowing what is enough and what is too much. I'm always complimented on how nice I smell (but haven't been able to figure out what "it" is), and I just got lazy about perfume. Sometimes I'll spritz some for a special occassion (which my husband loves!) but then I'm self-conscious about it like I'm trying too hard; ultimately it fades really fast on my dry skin anyway. Fortunately, I wear fragrance very well - my chemestry allows it to smell the way it's intended to and doesn't give me any reactions.

This is sooo me. I buy perfume or scented oils and then they don't smell right on me later in the day or they give me a migraine. It's sad really. I mean I think I smell pretty good most of the time but I'd like to be able to spruce up my natural scent every once in a while.

I've always had a great sense of smell, any gas leaks in the house...I was the first to discover it.No, I'm not part bloodhound ;0) So therefore, perfume has just not been part of my routine. The one that I've dabbed on my arm on occasions is Obsession. When someone else has on a lot ofperfume or after shave on... I smell like it and get a headache... the turn off is that peoplethink they have to pour it on ... I just don't get it ????

Melony34 - I can't really speak to who does test on animals (if any companies still do), but most green type products like the ones reviews on Green Chi Tuesdays are pretty vocal about NOT testing on animals. Heaven knows I don't fall into a category of animals rights advocate (my first pet wound up in my Aunt's freezer as hamburgers and steaks), but I've been REALLY happy with the products I've tried based on Chi Chi & co's reviews.

I stopped wearing perfume when I was pregnant with my first child out of the usual abundance of caution with which you do everything when you are pregnant with your first child. I used to spritz a little in my hair (and on wrists), but now I use Aveda shampoos and conditioners and find that the fragrance is mild, pleasant and clean-smelling and, even though it is not as strong, lasts longer than a perfume.

that's me! i work in a doctors' office. i had an extremely strict teacher through school - no long hair, no long nails and NO perfume. i even use a lotion that is completely scent-free. every time i smell perfume on a co-worker i hear my teachers voice in my head - not everybody wants to smell you, and what smells good to you could cause an allergic reaction to someone else.

Ever wondered why I hardly ever chime in when a fragrance or candle is reviewed? Strong fragrances repel me like similarly-charged magnets. I never buy before I sniff, and generally steer clear from perfume, and other highly scented cosmetics, hair and body products. My nightmare is to be caught in a warm, crowded elevator with several highly scented and pungent people stifling me from all sides. Even the thought of this makes me swoozy. Generally fragrances irritate my sinuses and give me a nasty headache.

I never use perfume. At first it was because I worked in the medical profession and it was restricted, but I rarely found a scent I would want to smell like. It is strange because I smell everything! If I get daring enough or if I am going out I will spray a body mist or body spray-something totally fresh and clean smelling. If I could bottle pink caress soap scent or johnson baby lotion (I would). I used to work with a woman who literally bathed in fragrance-the whole "you smell like a french whore house" quote over and over...less is more. I wish I could find something that was just a hint of frangrance, something clean and subtle. hmmmm... a challenge...

As I have gotten older or maybe it was after I had kids,I can not stand wearing perfume. At first the fragrance smells good but then after about 1/2 hour it reaks. Perfume also makes me stuffy, whether I wear it or someone standing next to me is. All of this really bumms me out, because I love some of the perfumes out there.

I used to own tons of perfumes, and I even worked at Victoria's Secret in the Beauty department selling perfumes and lotions. I've also suffered from migraines my whole life, and they were never brought on by scents, but in the last 2 years or so I've become more and more sensitive to fragrances, and I can no longer wear any perfume. I can do scented lotions and body wash occasionally but that is my limit. I've even had to ask my boyfriend to stop wearing cologne if he knows he's going to see me, poor boy. Just walking by someone wearing perfume can trigger a migraine that will last all day.

Yep this is me. I occasionally will wear a scented oil...like the free one Aveda gave me, but I haven't bought any type of perfume product in almost 20 years. I used to have so many fragrances I couldn't even possibly wear them. One day I think I realized they were giving me headaches. When I ride in the car with my mom (who always has on RL Safari) I get very nauseated and car sick. The perfume smells just really gets to me. I find it can be overwhelming. I think I have a powerful sense of smell! It was even worse during pregnancy. I had to take all air fresheners and candles out of my house because of the smells. Now don't get me wrong, I loooove candles...just not when I'm pregnant. So when I do wear a scented oil or perfume (only samples cause I don't buy them) I wear very little.

I have tried so many different types of perfume from browsing in the store or trying whatever my mom has bought. But every time i put some on, my eyes get watery and i my nose starts to itch. I avoid the the perfume aisles in the store or walk really fast by it. I have been ask so many times what perfume i wear i just tell them that i just take a shower to smell this good lol. I do want to be able to wear perfume and feel like i smell good when i do wear it.

I never wore purfume, even though I have several bottles. The problem for me is that I can't stand the alcohol-y smell... which is funny since I used to sell purfume when I was in high school, it think that's why my sense of smell is so good. However, I did get a sample of Theme Sarong which I must say I love. It's pure oils and there is no trace of alcohol. It's like a mini vaca. to the beach. Also, it's a roll-on so I can put as much, or as little as I would like.

Yup. Me as well. I don't know if it's my body chemistry (I've also never found a nail polish that didn't begin noticeably peeling within 24 hrs), but I've simply never found a scent that was a)lasted over an hour and especially b) didn't smell...odd and vaguely chemicalish.

Yes! Yes! Sadly, this is me. I have been on the life long search for the one perfume that causes others (anyone!) to say "Ooh, you smell good!" Unfortunately, everything I try either gives me an incredible headache, disappears within an hour, or has my dear husband asking, "what are you wearing?" (And he doesn't ask this in a raised eyebrows, flirty smile kind a way but in a tone that says "please go take a shower and wash that off"). Does my dream perfume actually exist? The hunt continues...

Hello...thought I would post on this one. I use to be a person that would bathe, powder, lotion and perfume myself to death (all the same scent products)...then I met a really great guy who got a headache and sneezing fit every time he was with me. We first thought it was the cat or the dog, but no it was me! Because the relationship had great potential, I gave up all the smelly stuff and we have been together for over five years now. I use some very light perfumes when we go out, but only one pump at the most. I never knew his pain until I flew to San Francisco over the Christmas holidays and we were in a row behind a woman that must have used an entire bottle of estee lauder cinnabar....(trust me you can not mistake this smell) and I thought I was going to die! I had to keep a tissue over my face for hours. I will never never never be the person I was before with perfume..... less is better. I think it is a matter of respect of space of others around you. If you like the smell, then by all means wear it so that you can smell it, but all that takes is a spritz or two.... the entire third world does not have to know you are in the room, left the room and will linger in the room for days after your departure. I don't think anyone enjoys being around that.

I don't wear perfume either. Since I work as a technician assistant in an animal hospital I'm exposed to dozens of people in one day and could easily cause an allergic reaction in any of them unwittingly. I have allergies myself and know how painful it is to be stuck in close proximity to someone, either in an exam room or working on an animal in any of our treatment situations, inhaling something I know is going to cause a migraine any second. Some of my lotions have some scent but they are light and natural and hopefully don't offend anyone, at least they haven't yet and if they did, I would change stop using them at work immediately.

I've tried perfumes before, but for some reason strong ones give me really bad migraines. Plus, the skin on my arms can get really sensitive, so any scented lotions and perfumes makes my skin break out in a nasty, sore rash. If it's a really special occasion (read: my senior prom last year), I'll spritz a tiny bit of Aquolina's Pink Sugar on the outside of my undergarments and, if I'm feeling adventurous, a dab of mist over my hair.I have to be careful to not put on too much, or it's headache city for me. :( It's terrible, because the smells of perfumes sometimes limit my time in places like Sephora.

Yup! This is me. I NEVER wear perfume. I was taught throughout college and early in the job search process that it's unprofessional and I never could tell the difference between what the "right" amount was and when was too much. Of course I deodorize and my hair always smells nice and clean (thank you, Herbal Essences). Fresh breath is important, too, but no perfume for ME!

I have always been in love with fragrance. Unfortunately I was diagnosed with severe allergies and asthma this year and can no longer indulge in this simple pleasure with many scents. I have to be very careful to find something not too strong. I long to find something to fill this void! My husband stopped wearing cologne years ago because his job essentially required him to. He worked with teenage girls and his bosses said that the cologne made him too attractive to the girls. Go figure!

I don't know what it is, but every perfume I put on smells wonderful for five minutes and then turns on me. I don't know if it's my body chemistry or what...but everything gets bitter smelling on me. When I was 12 I noticed Love's Baby Soft didn't smell so sweet on me. It was acidic. I have noticed this happening with other people. I will love a fragrance on one person, and not another. They need to create a fragance based on body chemistry!

My friend is a die hard animal activist and she said that there are makeup and perfume companies that still test their products on animals, I am writing this on her behalf, She stopped wearing perfume and makeup and only uses natural deodorant and body lotion/soap products because of it. Is it really true that companies still practice animal testing, I would love to be able to give her the gift of perfume again.

Oh, how I long to wear perfume! I love to be surrounded by fragrance: candles, oil diffusers, room sprays, whatever. I just do not wear it. I have roamed the fragrance departments sniffing all of the beautiful bottles and have yet to find one that didnt turn into some strange chemical smell in the drydown. They can smell so beautiful on me at first; however, they leave me smelling like the mothballs my grandmother used to hide in her closets.
