COSMETIC LINGERIE! GROUP THERAPY-I NEED SOME ANSWERS!
Kate2004rock our resident Sephora insider runs the show here on Saturday. She needed a group counsel! Let's help her out!
After complaining last week about my "Water Water Everywhere" existential crisis (Note: I have amassed these hundreds of products and have nowhere to store them and can't seem to use any up), I decided to do a little experiment this week. I wanted to know which products I really couldn't live without. So I didn't change a thing. I used whatever products I "felt like" that day hopping from brand to brand, formula to formula, color to color. All week. Right now you're thinking, Katie: that's completely pointless. The first step is admitting you have a problem. You've done that. Step two: Alter the behavior. HELLO! Ok, well I wrote down exactly which products I used every day, a product diary, if you will. I started with morning cleanser to final eye cream and lip balm at night. Here's the results:
I use all these products equally. Often two different brands/formulas of the same thing - for different reasons. Example: I'm going back and forth between LORAC's AquaPrime and the Laura Mercier foundation primer. I use the LM when I want the makeup to really stay put. I use the LORAC when I'm just going to class and not needing so much performance. And I just like the Laura Mercier better so I'm trying to use up the LORAC.
I'm also trying to use up my Fresh Umbrian Clay face lotion. But I've been breaking out and so I sort of switched to Caudalie some days too so it would soothe my skin. Again - I'm just digging myself further into this hole. And don't even get me started on mascara. I've been using Sephora Brand lash plumper for everyday wear. Except when its buried at the bottom of my colors-du-jour basket and I could get to the DiorShow unlimited faster. But then I used DiorShow blackout for going to the bar last night. And this morning I used Givenchy EyeFly because it was on top from last night. SICK.
However, there were the products that I do use every day, without fail: UD Primer Potion, Bourjois Colored Brow Gel, TheBalm Time Balm Concealer, Caudalie Lip Balm. Yeah, that's about it. Ok, so here is the excuse that I've justified by myself. Those products I just mentioned are my "lingerie." Except for maybe some of you more "earthy" girls out there reading this, we all wear a bra and panties every day. But we change the clothes around them. Some days I wear running shorts and a t-shirt. Today Jeans, a sweater, and cowboy boots. It changes - so therefore there's no reason that my "makeup clothes" shouldn't change around my cosmetic lingerie? Right?
Well I want to know what you all think. Am I completely delusional? Is there method to my madness? Do I really need a slap in the face, a basket, and some serious effort to put away all but one of everything and use it up? Do you have makeup lingerie? What is it? Enable me please!
Any insight to Kate's issue?

I'm getting clearer, but its still cloudy. LOL. Now, when I went to Paris this last time Strawberryfields was there to help me back and I forced her to sit there with me and I ONLY brought like ONE foundation and ONE primer and TWO mascaras and like two eyeshadow sets all for one week I was so proud of myself!
Katie
I think Kate is right in that you have all these products because you need them for different reasons. It's so important to have a good foundation, like lingerie. You'll almost never find a product (or bra) that goes beyond one to two tasks. It's good to have choices. With what little makeup and products I have there are times that while I love the product, I start thinking...you know...it would be great if it could do this...so I start looking for another product/color that fulfills that need. And some times you just need to treat yourself:) Keep it all KateRock if that's what you want to do... sometimes we need those things in life. I have over 200 art history books with boxes upon boxes of art history related articles from grad school. I rarely use them...but am I going to get rid of them...no, it just ain't gonna happen:P
Oh Kate. You need to destress. Can I recommend a product? Listen, I nearly cried myself silly while reading the People Mag Style issue today. There is a page (ONE???) for "neatly storing your cometics". They were lovely cases and storage drawers and I would have needed FIFTY to get some of my stuff in. Yes, I have tried, the "use it up because it isn't my favorite" approach. But if it isn't my favorite why do I have to use it? Aren't I worthy of the better product? So when I head off to teach Pilates I try to use the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, but what if TheBALM is on top? And I try to use the Smashbox O-glow over the Laura Mercier, but sometimes I really want a swipe of Nars. My Bad Gal blue mascara is for nighttime, but damn if it wasn't the first one I got to and on it went and off I went to Pilates. At least it is not a brightly lit room. My one trick for getting rid of facial moisturizers I really don't like is to use them on my feet and elbows. Less guilt over throwing away a used product. Now I just saw a Dior shadown I think I need because I only have 2 drawers of shadows. I would need 16 eyes to use this stuff up.
I just don't see how one can have too much makeup. Kate-buy more and get rid of none. But don't listen to me, I'm totally sick.
Yes, I sat there on Kate's small bathroom floor with baskets and baskets of makeup strewn in front of me. It took us a looooooooong time to figure out what to pack up for Paris. And in the meantime, I found about 50 different products I want to add to my own makeup stash. But Kate did manage to narrow down her selection... and then borrowed some of my makeup when she realized we'd forgotten some (how did we forget the staple black eyeliner, Kate!?). Anyway, Katie, I wouldn't worry too much. Just think how much less space makeup takes up than something like shoes!
Oh Katie, I love this post!! I got to thinking too about my lingerie...Here it is..Cat primer, Mac Studio Tech foundation, Diorshow blackout, Urban decay Eye Shadow Primer potion (how did I live without this stuff?)...this is stuff I use daily. Other stuff changes, like lip gloss (different every other hour), eye shadow (I use hard candy alot thse days), moisterizer..perfume..I am recently into Dior Miss Cherie (a friend got it for me this weekend)! Oh another lingerie for me, that has become a very expensive one, I will call it my diamond studded lingerie is the Firm and Fade Creme that Meg raves about I used t use it every other night, now I have gone to every night....it has changed my skin! I am so worried about it runnng out as I know it is pretty pricey!ok, thats all....sick I tell you. I am so glad we have each other fr support here :).
Kryssanthe - Bless you my child. I think this site may have actually reached a new plateau of enabling: I am sincerely and utterly impressed. Who cannot equate the gifting of near-orphaned product to missionary work? And if MMU is not a religion, it IS most certainly a cult. Of course, I personally like the equation of make-up to lingerie. After all, there are certain unmentionables I wear for certain tasks/outfits: cotton boy shorts for drudgery and lacy things for fun. I purge my lingerie about as often as I purge my cosmetics - and generally it is only because they’re long past their expiration date - or in the case of my unmentionables, because I need room in the underwear drawer (very few reach an expiration date). Without an occasional purge, I’d need an underwear closet.
DDoll--that's me. A giver all the way. I interrupt my time healing lepers and feeding starving orphans by sharing the joys of high-end cosmetics. I like to think I'm doing God's work. Ahhhhhhh*choir of angels*
Kate--I feel your pain. I keep trying to weed out some of my stash. It's almost impossible. I've accepted that I'm emotionally attached to my makeup. The evidence of my sickness currently covers a long dresser, a lingerie chest, a deep shelf in an armoire, several makeup bags, a large Sephora train case, along with some lovely lidded baskets and I know there's more in the dresser I keep in the bathroom, too... I actually HIDE most of it in my closet when my mother-in-law visits because I don't want her to judge me (she wears White Diamonds, I don't think I really need to say more). I have figured out a way to let go: I find my makeup a good home. It's just like adoption! About once a month, I'll clear out things that are new/almost new that I know I won't use and I mail them to my sisters or my friends. My sisters get so much swag from me that they actually invite their friends over for makeup parties and let their friends benefit from my illness. Some of those girls didn't even know what Stila or Benefit was before me. I imagine it's what the missionaries felt like when they tried to bring religion to indigenous peoples. It helps me to sleep at night.
You know, I've gotta add to this. Every time (or almost every time) I get rid of something I'm not wearing at the moment (i.e. that aqua/turquoise liquid liner I bought a season ago) I sell it on ebay or give it away and like clockwork-I long for it a few months later when trends come around. For example, I'd give anything for my clothes from the 80's. The beauty of makeup is that as long as it's not somehing that goes bad (like mascara) you can stash it away till trends change and you don't have to buy the next new thing-cause you have it a drawer! Plus, I always tell mys;ef with my makeup obsession-I could be obsessed with Gucci purses or Tiffany jewelry or something. Seriously, I bought another 20 buck lipgloss? Really, sue me! Kate- imbrace your love. I think it's fine.
I have four teenage nieces that love makeup just as much as I do. I pack up all my old stuff and let them sort through my madness when they come visit. Sometimes I even bribe them with free makeup if they will babysit for free...they get $10 bucks an hour to play with my kids so I'll do everything I can to save myself some $$$. I bribe them with names like Smashbox and O.P.I and they come running. Kate, keep the stuff you love. Don't worry if it is taking over your closets. There are worse things in life to be addicted to.
OMG Kate! That show TREMENDOUS restraint. I would pack more, and I currently own all of 4 eyeshadow palettes. (I gave away the colours that I just can’t get right.) Please tell me you brought back more than you left with!
"I imagine it's what the missionaries felt like when they tried to bring religion to indigenous peoples. It helps me to sleep at night." Kryss-this may be the single funniest thing I've read on MM. You really are a giver! I'm sure one day when you are gone these woman and their relatives will worship you, if they don't already. Large lipstick or compact shaped monuments like Bebe Golini wanted to erect (Early Brady Bunch for you youngsters)! And Kate-you can always count on me for enabling. XO.
IndianaFarmWife - nope I didnt even bring anything back! With the dollar/euro exchange rate as bad at is, its cheaper to buy things in the U.S. with my discount. They don't have anything there that I can't get here. Except cheaper Caudalie and Phyto products.
Katie
I put my 2 cents in on the other Sat. post already, but I have to add more - I still say (in echo of DDoll and others) throw away nothing. This may not apply to you, Katie, b/c you are way more hip than I am and probably know immediately what you can wear and can't - but get this - up until last week I wore pretty much only red lipstick! I tried nude on one time (or any light lipstick/gloss) and thought - nope, not for me, I need the color or I'm washed out. I even broke the cardinal rule constantly of wearing heavily made up eyes and lips together. So last week, Carmaqara (our new member who's also a makeup artist) finally taught me how to do it-just put a little gloss over the nude - can you believe I didn't know that?! Wow-I'm finally up to date...and nude lips will go "out" soon, therefore, I'm sure! Anyways, she used this color and said do you want to buy it? I"m like, no I know I have a nude or 2 at home that I should've thrown away when I got them 2 years ago. Well, we started looking through the palette at the store...and I started recognizing names...turns out I have 6 nudes in my posession that I thought I would never wear and if I was more charitable would've given away 2 years ago! So you just never know what you may give a 2nd look to in the future-maybe put the stuff you think you won't use in shoe boxes and label them and put them in closet storage?
I feel your pain Kate, I really do. This year I have accumulated more makeup than I have had in my entire lifetime. At least you are attempting to analyze your problem. Now you need to act! Don’t make me call TLC’s “Clean Sweep” team and send them out to Ol’ Miss. I love your makeup lingerie analogy. Now that you know what you use and don’t use; toss out the cosmetics that you haven’t used in the past month. I know that these items are dear to your heart, you have history/memories together, and you probably spent your entire Sephora paycheck on them. I recently went through my entire stash, and I still have a TON of makeup, but it is more manageable. And then, you will have room for new finds! Best wishes babe and let me know if you make any progress.
I AGREE! I realized that the stuff I really use is my cargo bronzer and tarte cheekstains, liquid liner and mascara, and balm. I'm like an organization f-reaaak, if I don't like something, I'll find some way to use it. :P Those things are my lingerie. In makeup, you only need enough organization to find the stuff you love, lol. <3
Oh my gosh, I cannot believe that DDoll remembers Bebe Golini...Everything pink and like a lipstick, right? It is times like this when I am brought back to those easy days of childhood watching pointless shows like the Brady Bunch that nostalgia overtakes me...Now back to the real world...when is the next Sephora Friends and Family sale? You guys are sending me into withdrawals (I can hear my husband groaning already)!
OMG - you girls crack me up. I mean it, I laugh out loud at the things you write. I really have a hard time with the idea that I can't even just pick ONE thing to use for an entire week. I don't want to be wasteful but there are differences between all these fabulous products! And desertdoll, you are not a good influence on me...so you are now my BFF for life!
Katie
I agree with 38, there's no need to throw away things that you really love. If you haven't used it in a month and if it's still in good shape, I'm sure you have a friend who would love a few new products, otherwise, you might just have to toss it. Or, find a better way to organize it all. Best of luck. :)
Oh, Kate... we all have things we cannot part with -I have coats dating back to the early 80’s. BUT - Have your makeup stashes truly taken over like a band of Tribbles? Are they slowly rotting like a mediocre salsa on the back upper corner of your fridge? Did you take a third full-size suitcase to Paris just for cosmetics? No - then don’t sweat it... Instead get an OCD pal to help you develop an organizational system. Yes - Well it’s kind of like finding that perfect little Bordeaux Blanc: Nice to savor, but best shared among friends. Open a few bottles, invite a few friends, hide the Caudalie and keep the Korres Party Survival Kit for the next day. Be Strong! And hey- maybe there’s a lip gloss that celebrates this cause.
I like Kate have way to much stuff, shampoo and conditioners, every sort of body wash and creme known to mankind, makeup by the crates (okay big totes), colognes, powders, perfumes and still have stuff packed away in the basement thinking I would give to the nieces and can't part with when the time comes to wrap it up. I tried the use one up and go on the next, lasts for about a week. I am sick with makeup addiction, like desert doll, keep it all and when you are done with college and have to move, then and only then, have your college friends come and pick up the stuff that doesn't hit 100%. If you like it 90%, give it away. Just think when you get to your new place, new makeup for a new you! Before your girlfriends get the stuff, seriously consider this hint that I found out when I was trying to unload stuff. Places like Salvation Army, groups that help women get off welfare and get jobs and all those sorts of places love makeup. I even gave my shower gels, powders and lotions to a group that helps migrant workers when they first come to Colorado because they have nothing. I thought some girl/woman would love to shower after a hard day in the fields and smell nice for her guy that evening. They also like samples that you didn't use, those little bags samples come in and of course travel size items from when you travel. I have turned this into my mission when I have something that I really don't care for (lime green and turquoise mineral eye shadow anyone?)These organizations said they would take anything except mascara. I was a bit surprised, but most people are not dirty with their makeup must be their thinking.Good luck
Indianafarmwife, see that's the thing. I'm really good about purging in other areas of my life. I purge my closet of things I don't wear at least twice a year - a couple bag fulls. I'm good about throwing away junk mail and last year's birthday cards and leftovers sitting in the fridge. But why can't I bring this into the bathroom? Seriously!
Katie
Oh, Kate, I feel your pain. I've become such a product whore and I'm someone that doesn't like to waste but I nevercompletely finish anything so it ends up staying. You've made me think about my lingerie and mine is: Chanel Cils aCils mascara in navy, Sugar Bronzer, and Bare Escentials Mineral Veil. Where I get stuck is on blush (creme or powder today???) and lip (stick or gloss today??) and in these two categories I have way too many to choose! Where I have made headway, though, is with lipstick/gloss. I keep all lipsticks in a basket and every few months I peek in and anything sample size or dusty gets thrown out. What I find hard to toss is that $80 eye cream that I loved, but soonafter found the next latest and greatest. But if you really want to get rid of stuff...have a baby! I went through this nesting/cleaning period when I was pregnant and pretty much threw out everything in my house. It felt great!Probably not high on your list, but it worked!!!!
i love the term "makeup lingerie"- I tend to use a few items, YSL Touche Eclat as concealer, Monistat Gel as a primer, random powder/Maybelline foundation, Jane blushes and /or WnW highlighter, L'oreal Telescopic mascara ! I forget my lips and i skip shadows during hot summer days
You are not delusional at all. I firmly believe you can never have too many beauty products. I may be a little sick in the head though. If there were a jail or a rehab program for beauty addiction, I would definitely be there. I think of cosmetic lingerie, as your staple products. Like the things you use everyday, or nearly every day. My everyday staple products are mascara, brow powder, blush and lipgloss.
I'm the same way. You can never have enough, though!
I am another member of the "too much" club. Don't want to miss anything!
My make-up collection has exploded over the past year. My storage system went from two small make-up bags, to two bamboo boxes, to four bamboo boxes, to the four boxes plus a ziploc baggie of samples under the sink AND backups being stored in the bedroom. Oh yeah...I also have a few products stashed in a drawer with my flat iron. Oh...and the bowl of lip products in the bedroom. However, I have gotten pretty good at using things up. My lotion stash is down to a reasonable size. I'm gradually working my way through little sample bottles of perfume. MMU samples have been used up (although I've been adding to my stash too). I only ever have one open mascara, and rarely have a backup in the house. My real downfall is with eye shadows and blushes. When it comes to colors, if I like the color, I want to keep it, even if I'm never going to use it. Also, color products last FOREVER!!! I have been able to use up small blush samples, but some of the full size blushes that I have would take me a couple of years to finish if I only used that one blush every day. Same with eye shadows. It can take me weeks to use up a small sample, so using up a 5g jar would take AGES. At least I know I'm in good company.
