TEA TREE OIL! GREEN CHI TUESDAYS!

Tue, 11/13/2007 - 12:53pm

  • Body

Welcome to another Green Chi Tuesday with Chichi! Today, we’re talking about what I think is one of the most amazing green products out there and most of you probably already have a bottle in your medicine cabinet. If you don’t, I suggest you run out and buy some because my beloved Tea Tree Oil is a low cost miracle worker!

I first picked up a bottle of Tea Tree Oil while “browsing” the beauty aisle of my local Trader Joe’s. Ok, I was desperately trying to get my beauty product fix on the cheap. There where only so many trips to the Beverly Center my wallet could take! I knew that Tea Tree Oil was good for redness and swelling and was one of those items you’re supposed to have in your medicine cabinet, plus it was under five bucks. I threw it in my basket, took it home, stored
it in my bathroom and promptly forgot it existed.

Flash-forward to many months later in the heat of summer, I woke up in the middle of the night scratching my chest uncontrollably. A mosquito had got into my room and had a snack. I had three large bumps bites that would...not...stop...itching. I laid in bed trying to will myself to sleep until I couldn’t take it anymore and stomped to the bathroom. Well, a lot of good all of my fancy shampoos and body butters and scrubs did me. There was absolutely
nothing there to relive the itch and let me go back to sleep. Than I saw it - my unopened bottle of Tea Tree Oil. Would this unassuming bottle really work? Skeptically, I applied the curiously smelling oil and to my surprise the itching subsided immediately. Happily, I want back to bed and when I woke up the redness was gone and the bumps were almost invisible. Since that night many years ago, I always turn to Tea Tree Oil for any sort of skin irritation.

So, just what is this miracle oil? According to Wikipedia Tea Tree Oil is a clear to very pale golden color essential oil with a fresh camphoraceous odor. It is taken from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia which is native to the northeast coast of Australia. First discovered by the indigenous Bundjalung people of eastern Australia to treat burns and scrapes, Tea Tree Oil has been recognized as a potent antiseptic and is a known antifungal
agent.

While Australian aboriginals have long used Tea Tree Oil to treat a number or ailments, today you’ll find this versatile oil in everything from soaps and shampoos to toothpaste and cleaning supplies. A simple bottle of Tea Tree Oil is so beneficial and effective. I use it to treat any number of irritations, including:

PimplesI know you’re not supposed to pick at them, but sometimes I can’t control myself. Then I end up with an inflamed open zit. I find most blemish creams irritating and they leave me with dry and flakey skin surrounding the pimple. Tea Tree oil to the rescue - just a dab of it disinfects and soothes the pimple, while reducing the inflammation. The oil also moisturizes the skin instead of drying it out.

Bug Bites and assorted Itches Tea Tree Oil is a quick, effective and long lasting remedy any time you feel the urge to scratch. It works great for mosquito bites, poison ivy, heat rash, bee stings, etc.

Post Waxing/Shaving Treatment If your skin is irritated after waxing or shaving, Tea Tree Oil helps cool and soothe your skin. It also keeps ingrown hair and bumps at bay. The natural oil doesn’t sting your sensitive skin.

It doesn’t stop there! Tea Tree Oil is also effective against dandruff, athlete’s foot, cold sores and nail infections. You can pick up a bottle of pure Tea Tree Oil at your local health or drug store. I recommend the version from The Body Shop since they purchase through the Bunjum Co-operative, which was founded by the Bundjalung aboriginal tribe to make the oil available worldwide while protecting their tribe. It’s a small purchase for a good cause and I promise you’ll find yourself reaching for your magic Tea Tree Oil again and again.

Do all you beautyholics out there already have bottle of this cure all in your medicine cabinet? Do you use Tea Tree based beauty products? Someone must share my love of all things Tea Tree!

tea tree oil DOES help with yeast infections, as it's a natural anti-fungal! try a diluted douche with tea tree oil and water (i hope you girls know that, normally, douching is the evil!) you can also try a few drops on a tampon. don't soak it too much or the tampon will expand and you won't be able to get it in your hooha..oh yes, and tea tree oil works wonders on dandruff (another fungal infection). i seem to remember paul mitchell having a realy refreshing tea tree shampoo..

Although I've been blessed with fairly clear skin, when I do get a pimple, it's a doozy. I started using tea tree oil a few years ago after causing some ugly drying and flaking with Clearasil. Tea Tree Oil really helps dry up those blemishes without dryness. It doesn't smell very good, but that's abut my only complaint. I never heard of using on insect bites, but I'm going to try that next summer 4 sure and also on my legs after shaving.

Tea Tree oil is a must have for every beauty closet!!! Lavender too.. It is the ultimate for pimples, and bug bites.. ingrown hairs.. and any wound....for the stuffy nose I mix it with eucalyptus..I've even put a drop of each on the tip of a lightbulb to fill the room with the head clearing scent.. or in a burning candle! They sell fancy burners for this but if you want to use the at home method thats what I do.. but I suppose the light bulb thing could be a fire hazard...so far so good! And if your feeling like a cold is coming on, try about 3 drops of tea tree, 4 eucalyptus, and 5 lavender in a hot bath... it clears the head and relaxes you and really helps ease those cold woes!!!!

Chiggers. Burns. Stupped-up Nodzes. Chiggers are the worst... God forbid you’re wearing undies when wading through blackberries or rolling about on a summer lawn, because those little beasties will always get you right under the lace-trimmed edges. A little TTO takes the itchies away. A bit of TTO after icing down a cooking injury takes away the sting -the smell is also good sign that you’d better be taken out for dinner - SOON! And if you cry too much over the nasty little red-bugs or kitchen drudgery, a dab of TTO helps relieve your inability to breath through the ol’ schnoz...

Wow...I never knew it was good for mosquito bites. All I ever use it for is big pimples which is does wonders on. I have used the Paul Mitchell shampoo and I love the way it makes my scalp tingle. I'm going to try your technique kryss and add a few drops to my shampoo. I have very oily hair and hopefully this will help some.

How is the world did I not know this treated in growns??? I've beens spending all that money on Bliss pads for nothing? I love love love Tea Tree Oil. I use it all the time in the summer when my skin is extra oily blah! In the fall and winter when it gets dryer and colder here I cut back to twice a week. I have a body wash, face wash and the cute little blemish stick. My husband uses that stick all the time. He gets pimples from shaving and he like the stick because it's not girly and "It doesn't smell like a chick". I buy all my TTO from the Body Shop. By the way Meg, I think you started a revolution with your whoha. Tyra, Oprah everyone is all about the whoha right now. It's "The Vagapocolypse".

I love it, I love it, too!!! Blemishes gone within a couple days - or if you catch it early enough - never really forms. Just treated a nasty ingrown hair, too. Hydrogen peroxide didn't work for a couple days, then tried this and success by the next day! I kindof like the smell - and I'm a person that wants to barf from walking into Whole Foods from the "natural" smells!

I recently bought Tea Tree Oil because I had read about it's homeopathic qualities. AMAZED. It got rid of a bug bite, and another itchy spot. The smell is strong at first, but it faces, and the results are so worth it. Completely soothes skin. Will have to try next time I get a zit or ingrown. Total wonder product.

tea tree oil rocks!!! i used to work a the body shop, and i once had a customer who told me that it also clears up yeast infections.... i was totally grossed out after listening to her go into detail, but someone else confirmed he story later. i've always used it for pimples, and stings. the hubby loves his tea tree oil shampoo/conditioner too. tea tree oil, baking soda, and vinegar are the thee "multitasking" products in my house, just can't live w/o them.

Tea Tree Oil is awesome! I like to mix up my own astringent sometimes by filling a large atomizer bottle with witch hazel and I add a few drops of tea tree oil. Shake it up and spray onto a cotton round. It's really refreshing and it helps keep oily skin at bay. If you have an oily scalp, try adding a couple of drops to your shampoo when you apply it. Your scalp will feel AMAZING. I told one of my BFF's about the wonders of tea tree oil and she used it on a huge zit/absorbed twin and it cleared it up OVERNIGHT. Love this stuff!

I think it's an acquired taste but I love the smell of Tea Tree Oil! And I adore the Body Shop Body Wash with TTO. It's refreshing, has lots of lathering goodness and keeps my skin (especially my chest) clear. Somehow I've never tried a shampoo or conditioner with TTO - a situation I need to rectify soon. Thanks ladies for all the TTO suggestions - I'm adding stuffy nose relief to my list of uses. Genius - it will clear your nose and sooth the chapped bits at the same time!

I have used straight up tea tree on my face and it never did anything. I've used tea tree based products for my face and my face hated them. Now, the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo & Conditoner....HEAVEN! I'm trying to be a natural products gal, but this is one product that I can't sacrifice! It is so wonderful to take a shower on a hot summer day when you have the Tea Tree line in your shower. It's so refreshing! I've used a wannabe product from Trader Joe's and it's nowhere near as good!

I just started using this on my face for blemishes. It really seems to dry them up almost instantly. I put it on straight, then cover with vitamin E oil. I'm hoping for the best, I've had acne since I was about 13.

It's good for zits with a q-tip, and it's also good to add some to a carrier oil for a scalp massage. Also, you can add a few drops to your shampoo.

I was reading on the internet and I came upon a page saying that this oil helps you clean ur "va j j" . if you have any itching or yeast infection. You get a bit of it maybe 1 - 3 drops and mix it well with water..after you are done your shower rinse down there with this stuff. =)
