BALMSHELTER!! BY THEBALM
A huge "thank-you" goes out to Lani and Marissa, the two fabulous geniuses I've gotten to personally cocktail with from theBalm. theBalm sent out Megsmakeup some of their amazing BalmShelter for review.
Before our wonderful lunch ended at the very swish "Ivy", Marissa handed me a tube of BalmShelter tinted moisturizer. She told me that it wasn't out in the stores yet but she had a sample in my shade on her. She gave it to me for a sneak preview! I dropped it into my purse, It was about a week later when one morning I was searching for my car keys and I found the tube hidden in the bottom. Before BalmShelter had a chance to get lost in the Bermuda Triangle that is disquised as a Chanel purse-I placed it on my bathroom sink so I wouldn't forget to try it.
I am an LA stereotype. I drive a cherry red convertible. I love driving around with the top down. A very famous Beverly Hills plastic surgeon chewed me out for driving with the top down while the sun was still out. He said "I mean it, do not drive around before 6pm with the top down. I know you. You're never going to put sunscreen on everyday". I was so dedicated I even put a bottle of sunscreen in my glove department. I used it maybe twice. Like after I could see the burn starting to set on my cheeks. I'm glad reading me is so difficult. Shoot, what's the fun of a convertible if you can't put the top down and enjoy the sunshine?
This is why BalmShelter is one product I have a nervous breakdown without. It is superb! I don't normally give such a push..But..YOU NEED THIS! It is the best tinted moisturizer I have ever used and..TADAH! HAS SPF 18! No needing moisturizer, foundation, and then a topping of sunscreen. I mean it, it's so convenient and it really makes you look fabulous. I reach for it every single day! How's that for an endorsement! I mean, ladies, I have some serious products to choose from and this makes the cut daily!
After my BalmShelter experience, I wanted to shout its praises out to anyone that woud listen! Lani was kind enough to answer my pleas and let me spread the love to our reviewers.
Here's what theBalm says about their wonderful BalmShelter..."A superior formulation that provides long lasting moisture, BalmShelter Tinted Moisturizer gives you the perfect polished look while leaving your skin feeling silky. What else you need to know: BalmShelter Tinted Moisturizer SPF 18 has Broad Spectrum protection, which means it protects skin from both UVA and UVB rays. BalmShelter Tinted Moisturizer SPF 18 is non-comedogenic and will not clog pores".
Ladies, let me know if BalmShelter has you trading in your wheels for one that lets the wind in your hair and the sunshine on your face!

I have been singing the praises of this to every woman I know. And everyone who's tried mine has gone straight to Sephora to pick up their own. I've never used a tinted moisturizer like this one before. It covers everything but still leaves your skin dewy and luminous - when I went back to using my old foundation, I realized it made me look like a cadaver. The best part is that I have cut way back on other products because when I use BalmShelter, I don't need them. So I use about 1/2 the moisturizer and have stopped using primer and sunscreen. I put TheBalm on with my fingers and it glides right over my skin just like a luxury moisturizer. It is truly amazing - I'll never leave home without it!
what is it about this site?? i read a fabulous review and immediately go investigate! (FYI, amazon.com sells it too.) forget the more important things like finding the kids' holiday outfits, i NEED this new tinted moisturizer! so far since joining i'm coconut oiled, said YES to carrots, dothe ACV (blech!), have become insane with finding the apricot Nivea soap, lip tinted and lotioned within an inch of my life! god bless all the great product reviews and thanks to you allmy kids will be wearing mismatched items when santa hits town! well, you do have to have your prioritys after all..off topic: i was getting a relaxing facial today. ahhhh. but as soon as my gal opened her mouth to tell me to breathe deeply, iget a huge whiff of garlic. note to all people who rub and scrub...please do not wolf down a huge lunch of hummus or garlic prawnsor the smelliest food known to mankind. or at least brush your teeth before your appt. for god's sake! so now, instead of relaxing all i can do is figure out what she had for lunch. great, now i'm notonly UNrelaxed, i'm hungry too. geesh!!
Who, if anyone, thinks this is better than the Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer (Which I currently have two tubes of...so I'm sh*t out of luck for till their gone...)?
Katie
All I own is Tinted Moisturizer, regular make up is just too heavy for my skin. So I just had to try this after reading all the great reviews. I just received it yesterday from Sephora (online). I have to say, it's everything you've all said it was and now one of my most favorite and believe me ... I've tried them all. I use the Light shade, perfect'-)
I've been absent for a while, so I must apologize to those products I have yet to review! We've moved offices and all I want is a massage. When will someone invent one of those in a tube?? I can fantasize. I was very curious about this product. I have never used a tinted moisturizer before, and I don't really like to wear much foundation either. I definitely don't have perfect skin, I have freckles. and it's not from being out in the sun. In fact, I visited the dermatologist last week for the first time and as he was giving me my "skin check" he said he was pretty sure I was okay because I looked like I hadn't seen the light of day in years. Well thank you doctor!! It is wintertime THANK YOU! Anyhow, when I have foundation on, I feel like I'm not myself...and you can tell I am covering them up. Not so with this stuff! I didn't put it on all over, but just in my t-zone. the color was subtle enough that it blended in with the rest of my face and it didn't make me feel all greasy. Rad! Maybe it will help with my pastiness as I get whiter through the winter time.
Wow if DD is wearing an SPF moisturizer it must be fantastic. I must run and buy this. I think I may have to stop reading the site for a month, I keep wanting to buy everything for me when I should be buying gifts for Christmas. I wonder if HOB would appreciate Balmshelter???
Yeah, this is amazing! Really great, light coverage that somehow covers everything you need it to. It makes your skin feel good, like it does when you put on moisturizer (dewy, healthy), not like it does when you put on foundation (heavy, covered up). And it doesn't have that heavy spf feeling that I despise. Not at all! I didn't think anything could replace the Model Co. 3 in 1 on my favorite tinited moisturizer list, but this has! It's not only better, but it's bigger and cheaper. TheBalm just plain rocks!
I love this tinted moisturizer. I've never used anything like it. This is a really great moisturizer...leaves your skin so soft. Plus the color is perfect for my skin tone. I have yellow undertones and an olive complexion. I wear the light/medium shade and it blends in flawlessly. The only problem I have is my Sephora doesn't carry any of TheBalm's products, so I either have to drive clear across town to another Sephora or order online. I love all TheBalm's products and think every Sephora should carry them. I highly recommend this product.
Even if we don't go out of doors without a sombrero or bonnet, sun protection is still a must. We fair skinned ones have a special need to block those damaging rays that cause (heaven forbid; knock on wood; please, not yet, we're still too young) wrinkles. So, we've tried a bevy of sun screens. Many were so greasy that we looked oily (an enhancement for sardines, does little for people). Other products felt heavy and tended to clog pores. Our favorite foundation has zip SPF, and we do need some color! Then along came Balm shelter. This terrific product comes in three skin tones, and not only offers the appropriate amount of moisturizing but also sufficient sun protection - SPF 18! It's a very silky formulation that glides on easily with sponge or fingers, leaving skin soft and looking great. The result is a healthy, glowing, polished look.....and no need for sombreros or bonnets.
love it!!! This is the first "tinted" moisturizer that actially has great coverage! I need to disguise thongs on my face: unwven tones, healing zits, freckles. But i hate the look of heavy foundation. I have never met a "tinted" moisturizer that could actually cover, but The Balm has done it!! I got light/medium, it looks great if I have a little color, but for winter I'll need a lighter shade.
I love this moisturizer! I had been circling it at Sephoria’s, touching it, trying it on, falling in love. When we received it to test I jumped for joy. I use this every weekend as I love to give my face a break from wearing foundation. I just add a small tint of blush and off I go. With the last tinted moisturizer we reviewed I had to add some moisturizer to it in order for it to go on smoothly. Not with this one, the consistence is not heavy feeling, it goes on light and looks so natural. And then to have an SPF of 18, oh happy day!
Mel9, tinted moisturizer is instead of foundation. You could use it with primer I guess, but since it's so much lighter than foundation-I don't think you'd need to. I use this on days when I don't really need heavy makeup (which is most days for me and I'm not really much of a foundation wearer anyway). When they're really good (like this one) you get some moisture plus coverage. Highly reccomended.
Girls - do you use this with primer and if so, in what order? B/c primer doesn't moisturize right? I'm so confused - I don't know if I need this or primer plus foundation. Or do you do one on one day and the other on another day...help!! and thanks =)
Ok this one is definatley going on the "must haves". Meg sent me along the light shade of Balm Shelter-2 days before my cruise to Bermuda-how lucky. I didn't try it right away, just threw it in my cosmetic bag for the trip. WELL, this item was clearly the BOMB! broke it out as soon as I got to in the cabin, put on the swim suit-washed my face and ready for some SUN! My face was alittle uneven-I quickly(because those little drinks with the umbrellas were flowing)grabbed Balm shelter-it was weightless, and transformed my face-it gave me an even, CLEAN, and protected (SPF18) face. YAHOO I felt great and did not feel one bit self conscience about having no makeup on. (when does that happen!) The cruise was great, acually went with Megs sister and can't wait for the next one. How soon can you pack MEG? don't forget the BALMShelter...I definatley recommend this-oh, and those umbrellas drinks...
Admittedly, I was a tad skeptical of a tinted moisturizer. The last one I tried was in the 90's and it wasn't so great. But this is Meg, and she knows her stuff, and I'm always willing to give something she sends a try. Lippie had told me that she loved some of the other Balm items, and Lippie and I tend to agree on matters of cosmetics. The Balm Shelter gave me an attitude adjustment! I love this product. It moisturizes and provides coverage without being heavy. The color blends well with my skin (pale, with pink undertones), and the SPF is so essential for my burn-prone skin. Like Blus Lee Lee, I use this as part of my weekend routine with Tarte cheek stain. It gives a nice dewy glow and enough coverage that I walk outside with confidence. What's not to love? It's the Balm.
I do! And I love the Stila one. There's none of the "illuminating" stuff in in. Sometimes I think that Stila product can go on a bit light. This is more skin toned. Really good stuff.
My only problem with this is the shades.I have extremely fair skin with some odd pinkish undertones, so it's extremely hard to find any sort of shade that doesn't look orange on me. Unfortunately, Balmshelter is one of them. I much prefer the Lorac or the Vincent Longo.
I’m a big fan of tinted moisturizers and since everything we have tested from the Balm has been fantastic, I was really excited to try this one. This raised my opinion of the Balm even more! Like all the best of the best reviews on megsmakeup, everyone lucky enough to try this one was raving from the moment they opened the tube. “Oh my god! I love my Balm Shelter! Isn’t it great?” Looks like we have another candidate for the mmu Hall Of Fame. The coverage is great - goes on smooth and even and can be layered to get the perfect amount of coverage. I received the Light tone and it blended well with my fair skin, covering any redness, pores, pimples etc. without looking cakey. I love that it has SPF built in so I can just throw some on in the morning and go. I liked the look and feel of this so much; I’ve been using it for nighttime wear (I normally use foundation for an evening out.) The packaging is a simple, portable flip top tube that ensures you can get every last drop of this fabulous tinted moisturizer - love it!
I'm definitely gonna try this one...although I'm totally in love with me Tarte Smooth Operator, I really need this. TheBalm line is so cool because not only is it super effective it's also one of the most reasonably priced cosmetic lines I've found(thanks to MM) in a while. I'm totally loving the TimeBalm concealer, it goes on so smooth, covers EVERTHING, and last all day without ever seeping into those fine lines around my eyes...and Hello, it's $16.00..i mean DUH...no brainer, right!!! It has replaced my DiorSkin concealer-$29.00, almost double the price. I actually haven't used the 20% off sephora code yet( FF2007, for anyone that didn't know about it), so, I think I'll use add this to my list. This is a wonderful line that you can't go wrong with...I'm totally sold!!!
STOP THE MADNESS!!! When I walk into my local Sephora they yell, "HI KAREN! COMING FOR YOUR FIX?" And all fall down laughing. I cannot go to my local Sephora any more. I must order online or go far, far away. And NOW there is an amazing tinted moisturizer (I currently use Laura Mercier) that looks like I could fall for??? Oh, no, you will not do this to me. I have pride. I have dignity. I have a credit card. Off to Sephora.
DD - I feel faint! After trying Model Co 3-in-1 (thanks to MMU), I thought I had reached Make-up Nirvana. I considered erecting a shrine in honor of the miracle that is 3-in-1. OMG - I’ve seen my future, and it is BalmShelter.
This is the TM I've been using lately, and I really like it. Decent coverage, feels nice on, moisturizing, doesn't leave me oily, no breakouts, etc. And the SPF is certainly a bonus :)
that looks awesome! i really wanna try it!
Holland RayeLee Davida McCafferty
the bottle looks really nice! something i'd like to try...
Thank you for this review. I actually just got some.
The Balm is another brand I covet - Hot Mama blush has been on my wish list forever. One of my co-workers pulled it out of my makeup bag the other day and I almost died of envy.
I tend to need something with full coverage, so I have never tried a tinted moisturizer before. I also go for an SPF of 30 in my moisturizer because I'm super pale. This product sounds fabulous though!
I'm not really a tinted moisturizer fan as I need more coverage than that, I also don't tend to fuss over wearing sunscreen as I don't go in the sun. Of course, if and when I ever do go in the sun for more than a few minutes I do wear it, but that rarely happens. This product sounds good though, I have a few friends who could do with this.
