LIPSTICK'S BACK - SATURDAYS AT SEPHORA!
Every Saturday Kate2004rock brings you Sephora information like only an insider can! She's back to school this week with her deb tips!
Trends are such interesting entities. They come and go - though some never seem to leave. I guess that means they’ve become classic? I mean, there are some things that I thought were a “trend” but people still seem to be wearing them. And they’re still about as awful as they ever were. Number one offender? Scrunchies. We all thought they’d gone. But you know people are still wearing them. That somewhat homely girl in the sorority next door; my “too intellectual for fashion” biology professor; even my otherwise totally fashion-acceptable best friend Rachel who just wears them out of laziness. Also, foam platform flip-flops (see Do’s and Don’ts post from June). They’re tacky. They’re cheap. They make your feet look fat. GROSS.
Ok, I digress. This is about makeup! According to the powers that be (the Sephora marketing department), Lipstick is Back!. But really, this confuses me a little bit. I never knew that lipstick left! I can’t think of any cosmetic lines, large or small, that just stopped making lipstick a while back and started again this season. I guess maybe we preferred glossy, shiny, slightly less pigmented lips -definitely in the summer. Ok, so that all doesn’t matter. If lipstick is “back” (I still think it never left)—it’s better than ever!!
Stila has these new Long-wearing Lip Colors. They’re in thin, long tubes that roll-up. I particularly like the fact that they’re rounded. Regular tubed lipstick always looks pretty before you use it - but a well loved tube gets lopsided. Anyhow, these long wearing lip colors go on really creamy - but they don’t sliiiiide right off your mouth with a breath or two. But this color really stays on, in a dramatic way. And the colors are gooooorgeous. I have it in Exquisite (rusted peach). How fitting.
Dior Rouge colors are gorgeous and creamy. They’re not so matte that they look harsh but they’re mostly lighter colors that still pack some punch. I love Diorama #66 which is a natural pink and Pink Suspense #445 for a grown up pout.
And, how can you not love NARS lip color? I mean they have every color under the Milky Way but they’re just awesome. Velvet. Cream. Semi-matte. Frosted. It sounds like a cupcake factory! My favorite colors (they’re my favorites because I’m the one writing it and that’s really all that matters!): Viva Las Vegas (sheer shimmering champagne), Sexual Healing (metallic peachy rose), and the Velvet Matte Pencil (lipstick in a pencil) in Café Con Leche (candied ginger) and Cruella (the perfect red!)
If you want to be clearly decadent (which I always fully endorse) you NEED to go get the limited edition lipstick from Smashbox now called socialite. The lipstick is THE PERFECT NUDE and if you flip up the cap there’s a tiny mirror and a shimmery gold gloss! (See Tashagogo - there’s a mirror for you!)

Katie, that Smashbox Socialite looks soooo pretty. I'll definitely have to check it out. I've always been a lipstick girl. I love gloss, but I usually layer it on top of my lipstick. Speaking of gloss, has anyone tried the new Rimmel After Dark Light Beam Lip Gloss? I love it (not sticky, nice scent)...I got a very light sheer pink that looks great layered on top of my favorite lipsticks or worn alone for a natural look. The best part is the gloss comes with a mirror and a light in the wand so you can apply in the dark. Yes it's a little hokey, but hey who knows when it might come in handy.
Shoot now I have to have socialite! I'm never going to pay off my credit card!:)
The funny thing about the MUFE 201 flourescent orange is that I got it by complete accident. I wrote the story on one of Katie's Saturday posts about how my gbf(gay boy friend) Joel(who no longer works at sephora) put the wrong shade of lipstick in my basket and I didn't realize it until I got home. I got home and was all excited to open up my nude lipstick and it was bright orange!!! I was pissed. I accidently dropped it on the floor and broke the turning mechanism and the whole stick of lipstick broke from the base, so it just rattles around in the tube...LOL. Even with all that abuse...I learned to love the color. If you could see what I have to do to get this lisptick on my lips...you'd be laughing. It always ends up on my hands also, because I have to turn it upside down and catch it so it doesn't fall out of the tube. Go to sephora and check it out...put some on your hand and if it's too bright for you, find a shade of gloss with some shimmer in it and swipe it over it...then, I'm sure, you'll like it.
I've recently taken the big step to getting out of my perfectly happy little glossy world. I'm a lipgloss addict, so for me to even try lipstick(which I hadn't worn for about 10 years)was HUGE!!! I purchased a Make Up For Ever lipstick in the shade of 201(flourescent Orange) which sounds very scary, but it's quite beautiful..It's orange but I put it on very lightly with my Lip fusion gloss in Fresh..it looks so pretty. Next, I got a Benefit's silky-finish lipstick in nice knickers (a nice glossy berry color) it's so moisturizing and it makes my lips feel great. My last trip to sephora, I grabbed a Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in calliope...This is a stick of pure sex for me...the color is that perfect Julia Roberts signature nude...I am in total lust over this color. It wears like a lipstick and i never have to worry about forgetting to turn it all the way down before putting the cap on( hence, smooshing the darn thing) it's matte and doesn't seem like it would be moisturizing, but it really is and it's got great staying power...Seriously, what more could i ask for??? Gloss is my Queen and nothing will ever change that, but there's definitely room in this castle for some lipstick :-)I am making leaps and bounds this year!!! Oh i almost forgot, i also got another Make Up For Ever lipstick in 424(Antique Pink)I'm wearing it right now( i put it on before i started to writing, to give me inspiration)and it's soooo pretty, it's a dark raspberryish rose with a tiny hint of pearl..also super moisturizing...yay!! Katie...I just went to sephora.com and looked at that smashbox L.E. socialite...OMG..The tube is freaking incredible..it's like chrome..all sexy and shiny and MEOW!!! I want it!!! Do you think the Factor brothers could have a talk with the lovely Maureen Kelly(Tarte) and tell her how important mirrors are :-). Thanks Katie for another winning post!!!
I'm a lipstick fiend.. I LOVE it.. and wear it all the time.. But as I am a creature of habit I have to say my staples are MAC Red.. which I inter-change with MAC Russian Red.. not a strech.. but I feel like I'm getting wild! Both stay on until you take them off... food, wine, lots of chit chat.. your lips will still be RED!!!MAC Captive.. I don't even know if they make it anymore but its the PERFECT earth pink!!!The BALM coco my coconut.. this has been my favorite gloss for 4 years!! Its earthy.. neutral and makes my lips very happy! And I still adore my MegsMakeup find of Glo Minerals in Romance.. It's a soft pink.. goes on like a lipstick and stays put!! Nice texture.. not gooey!! I love it.Now I'm going to my Sephora wish list and adding MUF 201 Flourescent orange.. too DD and a couple NARS colors..
Lilykane...I think Sienna Miller's cover of Vogue would go great in between Crawford and Davis:) Those eyebrows are pure evil! Regarding lipstick...I have a few tubes but it's my mother who always wears a red lipstick day or night. Her vanity is out of control! She can get away with it too (salt and pepper hair, gorgeous fair skin with the lightest of blue eyes) and looks great wearing red so much so that she recently decided to get lazy and have her lips tatooed RED! I didn't know she was having this procedure done so when I went by to visit...OMG! I was speechless. All I could do was giggle. Let's just say that she was channeling a little of Tammy Faye (not at all like my mother). However, I'm happy to report that since her lips have healed it looks really nice. I would never do this...any surgical procedures or permanent things to my body give me the heeby jeebies. But to each their own. Lipstick isn't dead and will never be I hope. I love red lipstick and of course with a dotting of Chanel No. 5 (my mom's favorite but Coco or Allure in my case) your good to go!
Ha... thats true Sienna Miller's vogue cover would fit right in there!!!Wow your mom got her lips tattooed!!! She sounds like a very cool mom!I knew about eyeliner tattoos but lips..WOW!! Thats great it healed up and looks nice.. I couldn't do that either I hatepain! =) But I love red lips! My mom's a red lip lady too.. as was my grandma! It's in our genes!!! =) I swear MAC red is the next closest thing to lip tattoos.. It has the most staying power I've ever seen!! Tasha.. sounds like that lipstick chose you!! I'm getting it for sure!!
Lipstick and gloss seem to fight for the title of being "back" once a year. Can't they all just get along? Well, I'm all on the red lipstick train right now. I'm loving Kevyn Aucoin's Bloodroses and Jemma Kidd's Scarlett. JK's is great too cause on the other end of the tube is a plumping balm you use first. Very smart! I'm also loving 2 Limited Edition MAC colors: Strawberry Blonde (which is like a lipstick version of the Smashbox gloss Beauty, a pink coral hybrid) and Rubia (a sheer pink nude with gold shimmer). Kate-I'm with you on the Nars shades. I love Viva LV and Cafe Con Leche too! But I'll add to my Nars list, Gypsy (a sheer wine) and Spanish Red (a matte deep brownish red). Last but not least (I know, shut up already) cause I'm a Stila maniac, I think Luce is the most universally flattering lipstick in the whole world. It's a hard to describe plum/brown/wine shade with a hint of shimmer. Just gorgeous! You're lucky it wasn't lip-gloss being back, I'd be typing for an hour.
I forgot that I love barbarella with Striptease gloss on top. HOTTTTT.

Smashbox Socialite is fabulous! It is a perfect nudie/pink color. I love the textureand the gloss is gorgeous. The mirror is very handy.....
Ooops! The MUF lipstick I have is 201-- the same as Tashagogo. I will have to try the NARS lip pencils... does anyone know of a '60s style super pale beigey pink lipstick (either matte or shimmer)?
I agree-- I had no idea lipstick was out of vogue! For me lipgloss has always been a little "middle school"...it was the only cosmetic item aside from chapstick that one was allowed at age 13. My mom always wore Lancome lipsticks and their signature rose scent always invoked something mature and intellectual and classy- like my mom. (I am one of the very few people who were not embarassed to be seen in public with my mom. She NEVER wore mom jeans or flip flops; alwasy had her hair and make up perfect and wore beautifully tailored pants or vintage dresses for fancy events. But I digress.) My faves are Lancome and Chanel, but I think Make up Forever makes great lippies as well. I recently got MUF in 203, it's the perfect true orange, which is a very difficult colour to find. Estee Lauder makes great classic lipsticks that last long without drying out lips. I am still on the hunt for the perfect nude lipstick, though....
I am so intirigued by the MUF 201 flourescent orange now! It seesms like it would be absolutely horrible. But if 2 of you love it, it's worth a look for sure...
Damn, I've got a new favorite lipstick line. Has anyone tried Shu Uemura? (kate-I know you have) Oh my god, whatta lipstick! I just got 542, which is VERY similar to Mac's Strawberry Blonde (which is LE and totally gone). It's a sheer pinkish-coral with a slight berry smell and a totally see-through lucite tube. Everything about it is gorgeous. A big shout out to Pamelairene who just sent it to me! This line is kind of hard to find but so worth the hunt.
Will the lipstick on lip gloss violence never end? *raises eyebrows quizzically* I personally am a fan of both. If I do wear a gloss, I prefer more pigmented styles. Chanel's Glossimers are one of my favorites. I just snagged "Hibiscus". It's a similar depth to "Spark", but has a little more plum to it. "Force" also came home with me. It's a very deep, very glamorous shimmering plum shade. If you MUST have a lipstick, I'm seriously considering starting a cult for Chanel Rouge Allure in "Voluptuous" and Paula Dorf Sheer Lip Tint in "Bcause"(swatches DO NOT do it justice). I just can't convince anyone to drink the Kool-Aid or shave their head...*pouts* Anyways, while I typically rock a red lip during Fall/Winter(and I highly recommend Besame for red lipstick), this year I'm in love with shimmering plums and berries.
I have the Socialite lipstick from Smashbox and Katerock is right. It truly is the perfect nude. It's not one of those nudes that make you look like a corpse. It's fleshy and plumpy and gorgeous. I work at Sephora too and I acutally hid the last one we had in the store so I could buy it for myself! If you want a great red lipstick, check out Lola's cream formulas in Sweet Love (the perfect blue-red in my opinion) and Bitten (great for a dark, blood red lip).
I bought Socialite yesterday and I TOTALLY LOVE IT! It's a lipstick I can put on without a mirror and not feel like I might look stupid. (that's the ultimate test right?) But IT HAS A MIRROR. In all seriousness, it really is a great color. $28 is a little pricey, but the ultra-glam case makes it all worth it. Or so I tell myself.
I love nars belle du jour.

The lipstick I keep going back to is Sephora Manical long-wearing. I LOVE how sheer the color is...so pretty and velvety. I get a lot of compliments when I wear this stuff. My favorite color is No. 7, which is a bronz-y shimmer shade. I'm very fair and can't pull off a lot of heavy color, so this one is perfect! It doesn't last 12 hours or anything like that, but it does not dry my lips out in the least, and it doesn't feel like latex paint like some other long wearing varieties.
